Wear It Twice: Teacher’s Pet

por | | 0 comentarios

Everyone loves a long weekend, but is Labor Day break the most dreadful long weekend of the year? When it’s over, it’s time for students to go back to school and begin the day-in day-out routine all over again. Sure, there are lots of parents, and eager students, ready for the new semester to begin; but the start of the school year also marks the end of summer.

In anticipation of the year’s first homeroom period, this month’s Wear It Twice collection is inspired by some traditional school themes. I started with a pretty apple pendant - a great piece for the first day of school, whether you’re a student or a teacher.

The first outfit I created began with a plaid skirt - another school essential. I paired it with a pleated white blouse to complete the uniform look, then finished it with some sassy red Mary Janes and a pretty black floral headband.

The second ensemble is a lot more modern. The printed knit top features a unique torn yarn pattern, and looks great with red skinny jeans. To create a touch of school-girl charm, I added a pair of plaid platform boots and a black and white striped clutch.

Can you hear the bell already? Go the handmade route and get these looks, or something like them, on Etsy!

Bead Color Triads: Blue Tang

por | | 0 comentarios

Blue Tang by Charlene-SJ, on Flickr

With fall quickly approaching, August is a time for getting in a few final tastes of summer. We’re all taking last minute camping trips, and dashing to the beach, hoping to make the most of the season while it lasts. Even though the weather is still warm, little signs are warning us of cooler times ahead. Even some of the leaves are turning early, as if to say “Store some food or you’ll be next”.

For this month’s color palette, I wanted to focus on something colorful, tropical and warm. Something that would help carry summer heat and light on into the darker autumn months.

Blue Tang Color Palette

The blue tang is a boldly colored reef fish from the Indo-Pacific, also called the palette tang. It has long been a popular aquarium species, but especially since the appearance of Dory in Pixar’s Finding Nemo. I thought that a stunning tropical fish would make for some wonderful summer palettes, and the blue tang does deliver.

The first palette I created was quite literal. The deep yellow and blue of the fish easily translate into beads. To create Splish Splash, I used Miyuki seed beads in transparent cobalt and opaque yellow. For black I added a pair of CRYSTALLIZED™ - Swarovski pear-shaped pearls. Although the colors are borrowed directly from the image of the blue tang, they remind me more of scuba gear than a fish.

Splish Splash Summer Bead Palette

To create this Sea Monster palette, I had to turn down the brightness a bit, and started with some smoky blue shell coins. With their obvious aquatic nature, it’s still easy to see the summer theme. I matched them up with yellow cat eyes, like little orbs of sunlight, and shiny hematite black 8/o seed beads.

Sea Monster Bead Palette

The final palette was an odd one. I started with some transparent yellow seed beads, and opaque blue Czech fire polish rounds. After adding shiny black bugle beads, I thought that the group would make a wonderful sea anemone. But the beads began speaking for themselves as I drew the palette, and ended up with some kind of psychedelic palm tree.

20,000 Leaves Tropical Bead Palette

I had trouble finding a name for this palette. The best I could come up with was 20,000 Leaves. What would you call it?

#3 On Chloe's Must-Have List For Summer 2009: A Sultry Pair of Sandals

por | | 0 comentarios

A Sultry Pair of Sandals

As soon as the temperatures begin to creep anywhere near the 60 degree mark, I'm in sandals. Heck, give me a 45-degree day (and no snow on the ground) and I'm probably in sandals. I love sandals almost as much as I love dresses; the fact that I must confine my tootsies in boots and shoes throughout the winter thoroughly depresses me.

(I originally typed "toesies" and my Firefox spellchecker asked me if I meant tootsies. Why yes, yes I did Firefox! Thank you for keeping me refreshed on my cutesy vocabulary; thanks for making me sound like I'm a little old lady that belongs in New Joisey.)

But back to the sandal thing here. It really does depress me- the Sad Sandal Stupid Snow Syndrome (I shall call it) typically strikes in the middle of January. It's around that time of year I always find myself in my closet waving my arms around while proclaiming, "I WANT THIS SNOW TO GO AWAAAAY. I WANT TO MOOOOOVE. I WANT TO MOVE SOME PLACE WHERE I CAN WEAR SANDALS YEAR ROUND AND IT'S WAAAARM. I AM GOING TO PACK UP PETUNIA AND LEAVE YOU, HUSBAND OF MINE, I'M GETTING AN APARTMENT IN ARIZONA AND YOU CAN COME VISIT ME 'KAYTHANKSBYE."

I typically even haul out a few empty suitcases to emphasize my point, yell-talking and waving my arms around while piling sandals and shorts in the suitcases (with Petunia on top ignoring the whole production while chewing on whatever clothing tag she finds to fit into her mouth). Husband watches on, smirking to himself as I carry on ranting in my madness. He always rolls his eyes and nervously ignores me (or promptly schedules a trip to somewhere warm, like Vegas or...Arizona!) so I kind of get my way. But only kind of- we always return to the wintery city within a week and I'm back to being sad, itching for the warm weather and my sandals.

So! No summer is complete without sandals (and lots of them) and this year I am loving what I shall refer to as "Balmain-Inspired Studded Strappy Sandals". I have no idea if that's what the fashion world is calling these, but that is what I've decided to call them. Hang on here, and you will see what I mean.

1. The high-end:
#3 On Chloe's Must-Have List For Summer 2009: A Sultry Pair of Sandals

For my expensive category I chose none other than the Balmain beauties themselves. They first made their appearance on the Balmain Spring 2009 Runway. I, however, didn't notice them until I saw this picture of Jennifer Connelly in a Balmain straight-off-the-runway-get-up at a premiere for He's Just Not That Into You. Holy moly. I can leave the dress (the shoulder pads freak me out and isn't this dress from the Spring 2009 RTW collection much prettier?) but those sandals. THOSE SANDALS. If I had $2,000 to drop on something completely self-indulgent and over-the-top and obscene this year, those sandals would be it. I don't (damn you sucky economy!) but lucky for me, "Balmain-Inspired" sandals are popping up everywhere. Hooray.

2. The middle:
#3 On Chloe's Must-Have List For Summer 2009: A Sultry Pair of Sandals

Both Zara and Bebe did a near exact replication of the Balmain Studded Crystal sandals, which I could have easily featured for my "middle" choice. However, I don't have a Zara anywhere near me and the Bebe ones are completely sold out (and going for almost $300, which is double their selling price, on any auction site). ALDO also does a knock-off, but I find ALDO shoes to be uncomfortable and poorly-fitting on my feet. So I decided to feature these Steve Madden wedges instead. They aren't exactly the same, but the concept is there- the chunky, studded, blingy straps swath your feet in total badassness. And that is what I like so much about this concept- the edginess of the design actually makes your feet look prettier- dainty, even, in comparison to the straps and studs. Wedges are easy to walk in and even easier on the feet, which makes them my sandal of choice for the summer. You get the best of both worlds with the Steve Madden Quikk sandals.

3. And the cheap:
#3 On Chloe's Must-Have List For Summer 2009: A Sultry Pair of Sandals

Looking to get the same look but not break the bank? Go Jane is great for this. They have also jumped on the "Balmain Inspired" trend and for $15.70 you can get these awesome little heels. The heel is a very easy-to-walk-in 3-inches (well, easy-t0-walk-in-for-me, I probably shouldn't make this bold statement for others because I am sure my 76-year old gramma would not find them so easy-to-walk-in. Neither would my Husband. I'll shut up now). The only downfall is the lack of cushioning. While they are lightly padded on the bottom, I would recommend getting some foot petals to place near the ball of the feet if you're planning to do any heavy walking in them. I actually have these sandals and love them, and after buying foot petals they're still only around $20. You can't afford not to get them. Srsly.

4. And wait! One more!
#3 On Chloe's Must-Have List For Summer 2009: A Sultry Pair of Sandals

These flat sandals are also another inspired version (that I also own!). They're comfy and look great with both jeans and dresses. They're also available in black, but I liked the gold version better for these. I wouldn't walk for miles in them (they're not that comfy!) but they are comfortable enough to wear around on lazy summer days and not be limping by the end of it. And again, for under $20- you can't afford not to get them! Isn't it annoying when people say that to you? It's like the ultimate in "I Don't Know What Else To Say To Pitch a Sale For These So I'm Going to Tell You They're Cheap And You're a Complete Idiot Not Smart Person If You Don't Buy Them".

But it's true. They're cheap, and you're a complete idiot not smart person if you don't buy them. So there.

5. And then there is me:

In the Go Jane sandals and the Candies sandals, of course.

#3 On Chloe's Must-Have List For Summer 2009: A Sultry Pair of Sandals

Not counting my Tory Burch Breely flip flops (and the J. Crew sandals I always get suckered into buying every year) I simply don't see the point in dropping a pretty penny on sandals. When it comes to sandals and the summertime, I like to completely go for quantity over quality. Er, um, I mean....I like quality (I'm not going to tell you guys to run out and buy something that's going to fall apart after 5 minutes of wearing it) but places like Target, Kohl's, Old Navy, and even Go Jane have great sandals at an even greater price. Go! Run! Buy!

So how about you guys? Love the Balmain-inspired studded trend? Hate the Balmain-inspired studded trend? What sandals are you coveting this summer?

Loving :: Kristopher K Design

I happened to come across Kristopher K Design when I discovered Spoonflower a couple weeks ago (see this post), and I'm so glad I did. I'm new to her work, but I'm a big fan already, and Kris has got me thinking about ways to use her fabrics (Is it too late to learn how to sew? I want my own Black Coral pillow).

From Kris' blog:

"My name is Kris, from Kristopher K Design, Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. I have a background in Art and Interior Design and an absolute obsession for beautiful prints on natural organic fabrics. I adore French Provincial and Modern Interiors, and love to design and decorate with tertiary color palettes inspired by nature."

I love Kris' patterns and designs. I love her color choices. I love the styling in her photos. Looking at her fabrics makes me realize that I seriously want to learn to sew, pronto, but maybe in the mean time, I can order swatches and hang them on my wall (that wouldn't be weird, would it?).

Chimera Necklace

por | | 0 comentarios

The Last Chimera by D. Hellandbrand
The Last Chimera

When Zeus banished the Titans to Tartarus in the Greek myth, the giants took their revenge by sending forth their monstrous children to terrorize the realm of the new gods. Gaia gave birth to the serpent Typhon, and though he would also be defeated by Zeus, he was able to wreak much havoc on the world, and sired three more terrible creatues: Cerberus, Hydra and Chimera.

These three-headed beasts are well known in Greek legends, and are still favorite monsters in many fantasy stories. The least well known is the Chimera, though it is arguably the most interesting of Typhon‘s children. With the heads of a dragon, a lion, and a goat, this monster is often depicted as female. In some versions of the legend, the Chimera was the mother of the Sphinx.

In modern art and stories, the anatomy of the Chimera has taken on many different forms. A Chimeric Creature is a blending of three monsters and animals, sometimes with multiple heads, and often bearing the wings and tail of a dragon.

The Inspiration:

Before I took up bead weaving, I collected vintage acrylic and lucite beads, and used them to create tapestries of bead strands to decorate my home. After many moves and encounters with kids, some of them are a bit disheveled. One that has survived completely intact is made entirely with red and black beads. It’s one of my favorites.

Like any decoration that hangs around for a long time, I had started to take my bead tapestries for granted. The red and black strands caught my attention one day, and I wanted to refresh my interest by making a piece of jewelry with the same elements. When I thought of the red and black together, I thought it would be fun to create a tribute to the mythical Chimera, using the traditional three headed version as inspiration.

Chimera Bead Palette

The Beads:

I started with three shades of 11/0 seed beads - light amber for the lion, Siam ruby for the dragon, and opaque black for the goat. For accents, I combined two mixtures of Fire Designs Furnace Glass beads - Queen of Hearts and Strawberry Shortcake. I selected my favorites in red, black and brown from this new mixture. I had a hard time choosing, and took a long while to create a balance between the single colored beads, and those with striped accents. I also added mixed strands of Czech fire polish beads in amber, jet and garnet, and a homemade mixture of hex cuts and Toho™ triangles in my Chimeric color palette.

Chimera Necklace Pendant Detail

The Beadwork:

I have always been a huge admirer of Margie Deeb’s Rainforest Cascade necklace, with it’s luscious strands of beads. I think most bead lovers can relate to the intense craving that thick strands of beads can induce. Although I love to look at them, I’m usually reluctant to use bare seed bead strands in my designs. My seed beads call out to be woven! So I sketched out a design that would have the same cascading feel that I liked, but used the tiny beads in a more structured way.

Chimera Beadwork Necklace - The Sage's Cupboard

To create a pendant, I used black hex cuts to make a tapered base, then added 17 strands of wide fringe. Each of the 17 strands ends with a cane glass bead, and has long fronds of seed beads ending with hex cuts or fire polish beads. To add some depth to the fringe, I mixed my original three seed bead colors with color-lined seed beads in dark amber brown, mauve and jet black. The lion colored fringe is at the center, so that the outer colors match up with the tubular peyote rope. I love the way the wide fringe has elements of both beadweaving and multi-strand, and the furnace glass adds just the right amount of texture. I almost don’t want to let this piece go!

Starry Art Bracelet

por | | 0 comentarios

Happy New Year, Cherubs at Moon

The end of the year can be both magical and hectic for anyone who loves to celebrate holidays. Some of the most wonderful holidays are all pressed together during these few months. Halloween and Thanksgiving are melded together, then give way to the combination of Christmas and New Year’s. Of all these holidays, the only one that doesn’t have a clear place in the decoration aisle is New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

The Inspiration:

I wanted to create a piece of beadwork that reflected some of the wonderful qualities of an often neglected holiday. Whether one makes resolutions or not, the fact is that the first day of the year is an important one. It’s a time for looking forward, and orienting one’s self with the past and future. To me, a perfect New Year’s Eve night is a crisp, cold winter evening spent with warm company.

The Beads:

Snowy Night Beads

I started with a handful of tiny yellow and white Cubic Zirconia star beads from Artbeads.com. Not only are they perfect for imagining a clear winter night, but they can also be an example of the sort of choices we make on the first day of the year. Instead of diamonds, which can have unfortunate origins, these little beauties are created with science. To create a snowy night, I also selected 6/0 silver-lined crystal seed beads, cobalt blue 11/0 Miyuki’s, and rounded out the palette with 8/0 silver lined blues.

The Beadwork:

I had envisioned a bracelet using the embellished right angle weave technique in my Gaia Pendant, with loops of pretty blue seed beads and sparkling CZ stars. After creating the base with silver lined beads, and adding the loops, I stood back and looked at the bracelet, not quite satisfied with how it looked. The dark blue loops were such a contrast against the light bracelet that they looked stark and somewhat naked. So I picked up the thread again and started adding more cobalt blue loops wherever they would fit.

The result of my experiment turned out much better. The addition of more 11/0 seed beads gave the blue section more weight. I like the way the loops are reminiscent of abstract art, sort of like a Matisse cut out, or just plain old doodling. The yellow and white Cubic Zirconia are the perfect contrast with the cobalt blue beads, and add a bit of the winter magic I was hoping for.

New Year's Eve Bracelet
