The original inspiration came from Lucille Ball in I Love Lucy, Audrey Hepburn in Funny Face, and Mary Tyler Moore in The Dick Van Dyke Show.
Some know them as capri pants, cropped pants, clam diggers. That said, they were called "pedal pushers" in the 50s for a reason - they make a lot of sense on a bike.
More importantly .... ugly knees? These are great in the summer to keep cool, hide the knees and still look summery : )

Earth Hour was started in Sydney Australia, and after just one year the number of participants went from 2 million to over 50 million. This year the numbers are even greater.
When it comes to raising topics about the environment, there are so many ways to get people talking about the issues. Beading is one of them!
If youre an eco-friendly beader, why not make something for the Earth this month? You could use green, blue and white beads to represent the globe, buy some tagua nut beads for a sustainable project, or plant some flowers for the bees and then recreate them with beads.
And dont forget to turn out your bead lamp for Earth Hour!

Title: inspiration meets MP3
friday aftanoon. . . nothin else to do . . .whateva , don't watch this video
1. Rebecca Taylor, Tracy Reese, Catherine Malandrino. ALL ON GILT.COM AT THIS 12pm MORNING, BIATCHES, OHMYGOD. Oh wait. I mean uh, 12am. Yeah, yeah. That's the ticket. Gilt.com is starting this weird thing where they have night sales. Midnight sales. So don't log on to the site before 12am. The emails they sent out saying 12pm were typos. Heh, heh, heh. BACK OFF IT'S ALL MINE.
2. Husband and I started watching a very interesting documentary last night about Frank Lloyd Wright called, quite appropriately, Frank Lloyd Wright. Quite the scoundrel, he was. I've always been way into architecture (I can build a bomb ass LEGO house!) and I had always thought that if I were the career-sort-of-girl I would have been an architect. But I'm not a career-sort-of-girl. I'm more of a sit-on-my-butt-and-get-really-excited-about-something but then-completely-lose-interest-two-seconds-later sort of girl. I set high and lofty goals of myself to be this way. It takes a lot of work to do this amount of nothing. Anyway, we just finished Part 1 and will hopefully watch Part 2 later this weekend. It's a very well put together PBS Documentary, if you like those sorts of things (dorkily, I do) and I can't wait to get the on Mark Twain next! Netflix, I luv u. It's not even love, it's luv.
3. So I took Husband to the local sporting goods store on Thursday night, hoping to figure out exactly what I needed to regain my motivation for my workouts. I've been a big gym rat for the past six years or so, hitting the gym at least five times a week. But the past five months? Well, ever since The Great Bug of 2008 hit over Christmas, I've fallen off that wagon with a thud. What took people a mere day or two to get over took me about a week, and that's all it took to derail me from my consistent gym going habit. I fell off the wagon with a sissy shove and a jiggly thud, because I'm getting jiggly from not working out. And cranky. Ohhh so cranky.
You see, I workout for a lot more reasons than just staying trim and svelte. It actually helps with my sanity and my energy and when I don't workout I do weird things like eat grammatically incorrect boxes of oreos in one sitting and clench my teeth all day long and yell at Husband a lot. I'm pretty sure they have medication for people like me, BUT EXERCISE IS MY MEDICATION. I neeeeeeeed it I need it I need it. And lately, I haven't been doing it. At all. And I can tell. *unclenches teeth*
"Okay now, what is it you need from here exactly?" Husband asked, eyeing me as we walked into the store.
"Heavier weights! I need heavier weights, because the weights I have at home are too light and my motto has always been lift heavy or don't lift at all." I answered him matter-of-factly.
"Oh really. Since when has this been your motto, exactly?" Husband had his Sarcastic Face on. I don't like his Sarcastic Face. I once told him that I didn't like his Sarcastic Face, way back when we first started dating and those things could be considered insulting to say, and he said, "Pssh! I don't have a Sarcastic Face! What's my Sarcastic Face?" and I said, "Thatface. Go look in the mirror!" and he went and looked in the mirror and came back out and said, "Oh."
"Since always! I've always lifted heavy! I'm not messing around here! I like to get after it. Say, can you do me a favor and carry these 10 lb'ers to the checkout? They're too heavy, I um...it doesn't appear that I...um...I can't lift them..." I said, my voice getting squeaky as I struggled under the weight, "yet."
So while Husband was hoisting my very heavy weights to the checkout I managed to throw in a pair of these, too:
Pink Harbringer weight lifting gloves. Because if the boys in the weight room at the gym didn't take me seriously before, they'll definitely take me seriously now. They match my pink Polar heart rate monitor, and that's all that matters.
With fall quickly approaching, August is a time for getting in a few final tastes of summer. Were all taking last minute camping trips, and dashing to the beach, hoping to make the most of the season while it lasts. Even though the weather is still warm, little signs are warning us of cooler times ahead. Even some of the leaves are turning early, as if to say Store some food or youll be next.
For this months color palette, I wanted to focus on something colorful, tropical and warm. Something that would help carry summer heat and light on into the darker autumn months.
The blue tang is a boldly colored reef fish from the Indo-Pacific, also called the palette tang. It has long been a popular aquarium species, but especially since the appearance of Dory in Pixars Finding Nemo. I thought that a stunning tropical fish would make for some wonderful summer palettes, and the blue tang does deliver.
The first palette I created was quite literal. The deep yellow and blue of the fish easily translate into beads. To create Splish Splash, I used Miyuki seed beads in transparent cobalt and opaque yellow. For black I added a pair of CRYSTALLIZED - Swarovski pear-shaped pearls. Although the colors are borrowed directly from the image of the blue tang, they remind me more of scuba gear than a fish.
To create this Sea Monster palette, I had to turn down the brightness a bit, and started with some smoky blue shell coins. With their obvious aquatic nature, its still easy to see the summer theme. I matched them up with yellow cat eyes, like little orbs of sunlight, and shiny hematite black 8/o seed beads.
The final palette was an odd one. I started with some transparent yellow seed beads, and opaque blue Czech fire polish rounds. After adding shiny black bugle beads, I thought that the group would make a wonderful sea anemone. But the beads began speaking for themselves as I drew the palette, and ended up with some kind of psychedelic palm tree.
I had trouble finding a name for this palette. The best I could come up with was 20,000 Leaves. What would you call it?

Title: Beading with Soft Flex Trios Colors
Recorded on June 7, 2009 at the Bead & Button Show in Milwaukee, WI. I talk about the 10 new color choices in Soft Flex Wire. The Trios are available in 9 color sets as well as a Soft Flex Extreme set. Each set contains 3 mini spools with 10 feet of wire. So you get 30 feet in total, but in 3 different colors. This is a dream come true for designers and beaders alike. You can match your colored beading wire to you gemstones now.
Last week I tried using one of my own bead color palettes, and ended up with a pretty nice little peacock pendant. It inspired me to go back and explore some of the possibilities of other palettes of the past.
The first triad I ever created is one that Ive been wanting to use for a long time. Chemistry Set was made from a photograph of Saturns rings, and used purple and green seed beads with fiber optic cubes and rectangles. I always liked the combination, but I never got around to making anything with it.
Recently, I acquired some really pretty matte green druks in a sort of minty shade that perfectly matches my shamrock lined crystal TOHOs. So, I used these to replace the peridot green of the original palette and got to work.
I used my old standby, circular brick stitch, to make a pendant of four circles connected in a lazy zig-zag. I have only ever used the design with rivolis, but the brick circles are so much faster to stitch up, and easy to work with. I think I might have to revive the idea on a regular basis.
Eventually I added some purple cats eye beads to the mix as well, to pair off with the druks. They match the seed beads almost perfectly and it worked out really well.
The shamrock green doesnt give the palette the same industrial vibe as the peridot. I think its much more organic now, and the shape of the pendant is like motes of pollen clinging together under a microscope. Somehow it always comes back to nature!

We are highlighting the "Lillian" Gown. The bride of the 1940s had World War II to contend with. Rationing of fabric made simplicity in line and trimming an important factor to consider. A bride sometimes had no time to have a gown made before her fiancée was shipped off to war and had to make do with a suit or casual dress. The lucky bride had more time to consider her options. The most popular gown tended to be of rayon-satin worn in an unadorned A-line style. Although simplicity was key, wedding dresses were anything but boring. The A-line dress, also called the princess line, had a fitted bodice, a nipped in waist, and were usually fitted at the neckline, wrist, and midriff. with an A-line skirt. For those brides who wanted a little something different, over-dresses of sheer netting or lace would create a soft look. Moderate length veils were worn with decorative headdresses in a coronet style or a heart shaped style of fabric or lace, that would mimic a sweetheart neckline, a popular 40s motif.
Lillian is a stunning and accurate example of bridal wear from the early forties. This lovely dress is stitched in a buttery golden silk charmeuse with an overlay of caramel lace. The silk under-dress is princess-line, five-gore skirt fitted closely at the bodice and waist and is sleeveless with a sweetheart neckline. The overdress adds an air of modesty with a princess-line bodice, wrist-length leg-o-mutton sleeves that fasten with 4 loop and button closures, a high rounded neckline and fastens down the front of the dirndl skirt with 58 self-covered loop and button closures. The overdress made of carmel colored floral embroidered net adds a formal note appropriate for a church wedding.
And, if you are looking for a great Prom Dress, Cocktail Dress or Bridesmaid Dress ... Check out the Vivinne Dress. Gorgeous beyond words!

Title: Garden railway: 10 scale miles MASSIVE: Drivers Eye View of Bekonscot Model Railway
More info at Become a fan of us on Facebook! http://www.facebook.com/bekonscot and http://www.bekonscot.co.uk The Gauge 1 model railway at Bekonscot Model Village, Bucks. It's a 10 scale mile model garden railway of 1/32 scale, in a 1/12 scale miniature village. The line was started circa 1929 and has been updated continuously for 80 years. We strapped a camera to the front of one of the engines and sent it off - we've added some subtitles so you can see what you're passing. Model railways rock. The huge model railway has evolved since those early years, from Bassett-Lowke LNER and GWR outline stock through to modern image British Rail - when at one time, class 47, class 37, Hymek, western class 53, intercity 125 and even DMU stock ran. In the early 1990s, interest in the railway's heritage regained, and it was decided to revert to a classic 1930s appearance. Therefore you'll now see classic GWR railmotors, EMU, GWR 94xx tank locos, LMS Jinty, SR Q Class and many more freelance locos on the route. The whole system is controlled by computer, interlocked with hundreds of relays for points and signal operation. Note that the signals are missing in this video, as they are currently all being refurbished. The complex trackwork around Maryloo station is controlled by a Westinghouse lever frame in the signal box (where this video begins and ends) when the signalman wants to intervene. This train was preset to run non-stop - but of course would need to stop if another train was in the block ahead of it. This video took four takes to get right - we had to be nimble with the manual signals to make sure no trains ahead of this one stopped progress, or made it wait on the single track sections! Usually there are 9 to 11 trains in operation at any one time; a selection of them are seen on this video. Perhaps we should get a Thomas The Tank Engine for the line...? We're in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire - which is on the Chiltern Railways route from London Marylebone to High Wycombe, Banbury and Birmingham. hope you enjoy it as much as we did making it! Getting to know artists, as well as discovering their work, is endlessly fascinating to me. With that in mind, I started the 10 Things About series to give a quick snapshot of the artists behind the art! I hope you enjoy.
Beads and nature always go together. The worlds first beads were inspired by nature, and by early humanitys need to make use of everything at hand. Leftover shells, animal feathers, quills, bones and interesting stones were all used to make primitive and wonderful beads. Today, not all beads are natural, but even man-made ones can be used to channel our affection for Mother Earth.
One style of bead art that captures natures charm is the beaded gourd. Made from dried and hollowed vegetables, these charming works of art can remind us of how beautiful nature is. We often keep the natural world at arms reach, but artists like Nancy and John Chlpka give us the opportunity to embrace it again. The beautiful gourd bowls, birdhouses and jewelry from their shop, Wet Dog Studios, can inspire the Earth-lover in us all.
Inspirational Beading: How did you become interested in working with gourds?
Nancy: John gave me one as a gift. I got to wondering "Could I?" and for the last ten years the answer has been YES! Initially John hung around for the heavy lifting but about three years ago the gourd bug bit him, too. He has primarily stuck to pyrography and carving, but just last month added selections to my bead order!
Inspirational Beading: What kinds of beads do you usually use to embellish your work?
Nancy: On a gourd, bone beads are my absolute favorite. I'll often color them with a natural dye such as coffee or beets. Also, combining them with glass or shell beads can really make a design pop.
Inspirational Beading: Do you have a favorite color or finish to use?
Nancy: I've used every color in one project or another but usually find myself in the brown family. My designs use mostly a matte bead accented by intricately carved or flashy glass beads.
Inspirational Beading: If you could master any new technique, what would it be?
Nancy: I've finished a lot of gourds with rims of woven natural materials, and I'm experimenting with stringing beads to give gourd bowls a "necklace" finish.
Inspirational Beading: Who do you hope to inspire with your work?
Nancy: Anyone with an interest. I think people become so busy they ignore their own creativity. John and I spend hours at Art Festivals answering questions for up and coming artists - it's wonderful!
Nancy and John Chlpka live in rural Western Pennsylvania with their two dogs. The dogs play an important role in the business. Spike is Director of Human Resources, and Vegas is Director of Special Events. Both helped coin the motto for the business: "There's Nothing Friendlier Than A Wet Dog!" All are big supporters of the Animal Rescue group.
Nancy and John are frequent speakers at Art Guilds and Garden Clubs in their area, spreading the word about gourds. Both have won awards for their artwork and in addition to their Etsy site they are featured at The Blue Heron Art Gallery in Volant, Pennsylvania. Nancy and John are members of both the American and Kentucky Gourd Societies. They source their art-quality gourds from nearby suppliers, such as Front Porch Crafts of Kentucky.

Title: Do You Too Have a Vision Of Excitement, Hope & Abundance?
http://www.brigittemehr.com After weeks & months of constant fear based negative news, there is now a palpable feeling of hope in the air. After the historic presidential election last week the feeling in the world is now one of hope & optimism for the future. I live in the UK & even over here people are talking about change for the better under the presidency of Mr Obama – the beginning of a new world order, a new start based on hope & optimism. The culture of fear we have been living in has been perpetuated to a frenzy by the media. It is the media who tries to impose on us what they think we should be thinking & feeling. They constantly print stories of gloom & doom – good news does not make ‘good news’. By buying into this fear we lose energy to it, our vibration falls & our mindset mirrors that of millions of others. The more who begin to feel this way the faster the general energy of the population will fall – like a tidal wave sweeping over us that we have little or no control over. It can be difficult to swim free of this tidal wave but the more who do will make it easier & easier for others to follow. We need to remember that we do have a choice & do not need to inhabit a world of doom & gloom when there is so much to be happy & grateful for around us if only we took the time to see it. We need to make a conscious decision to live in a positive way & our mindset & beliefs need to mirror this & we need to surround ourselves with others who think this way too. If you need to change then now is the time to reinvent yourself – look at Madonna not only the queen of pop but also the queen of reinvention. Each time she comes back stronger, better & more successful than ever. You no longer have to live with your outdated beliefs, thoughts, jobs & relationships. All it takes is a shift in your mindset & a decision to change. We as humans naturally deserve to live in hope, ...

And Vinyly......a new spin on the "death record!" or rather, proof that "Rock 'N Roll never forgets!"
Quirky, wierd and definitely unusual ... but still utterly cool, check out and Vinyly. Created by a UK music producer who realized he "might not be immortal" after his mother started working at a mortuary. andVinyly allows you to have your ashes pressed into an actual, playable record, simultaneously putting your oeuvre in the death metal and soul categories. Now actually, you won't be around to make this happen, so you have to have someone take care of this for you : )
How does it work you ask: ashes are sprinkled by a person of your choosing, and baked onto a 24-minute disk, which can either be left as simple pops and crackles ("the minimal approach"), or grooved to play your last will & testament; a favorite song; or a personal message in your voice. To make things even cooler you can have a tribute song penned by in-house bands House of Fix and Daftwerk (with full input concerning lyrics, etc), and commission an album cover from National Portrait Gallery resident dauber James Hague, who'll mix your ashes into the paint -- and create an album cover for yours truly.
The average ash-load can be spread out to thirty records, and if you dare, (I mean so desire) can even be sold under the in-house R.I.V. (Rest In Vinyl) label at stores around the world. You'll be traveling the world solo and won't even know it!
And Vynily offers lots of services; for example, don't want the full body job ... you can do body parts; they will even take pets cremated remains.
Todays necklace design features one of my favorite materials - tagua ivory. I have a very small stash of slice pendants, and I thought it was about time that I made use of one. I like to give these beauties lots of room to stand out, so I decided on a simple spiral rope necklace.
I was searching through my bead stash for suitable colors to use, and came across a few packets of pastel colored peanut seed beads. Ive used them in spiral ropes before, as accent beads, but I didnt want to do the same old pattern again. Then it occurred to me that they might look nice as the main beads in the spiral rows, so I grabbed all three colors - purple and green Ceylon, and pink lined crystal.
Along with cream and white round seed beads, I made a spiral rope with three peanuts at the center of each row. I was so thrilled with the way the beadwork took shape! The peanuts lock together perfectly, sometimes alternating their position from vertical to horizontal. Because theyre just slightly larger than the round seed beads, they add a bit of bulk to the spiral rows, making them tighter and a little puffy-looking.
With the peanut seed beads in the rows, the spiral has a nice bubbly texture, but has the same drape and flexibility as a regular rope. I added a simple looped bail to the tagua slice, and thats one more necklace down - only 21 more to go!

It should probably come as absolutely no shock to anyone that South Dakota can be a little behind the times. This was never so apparent as I stood in line at the Fleet Foxes concert in Minneapolis. I thought I looked pretty smart clad in my trouser jeans. Yeah, smart for 2005.
I knew that straight legged and skinny jeans have been in style for a few years now and I did a pretty good job resisting. For one, I had a job that discouraged any sort of creative styling (khakis and vneck sweaters were my uniform lest my co-workers think I was showing off). For two...I'm an apple. I gain all my weight in my stomach/back (and occasionally boobs). I have skinny little chicken legs and no ass. I had no business being anywhere around a pair of skinny jeans.
But standing in line, surrounded by all sorts of cute and hip chicks of all sizes rocking the skinnies...suddenly I wanted a pair, too. And since I recently quit my staid job, I could now dress however I damn well pleased.
The road to the perfect skinnies was tough. I tried on pairs every where I went. H&M, GAP, Old Navy, J Crew, Express. Nothing worked. They were too long. Too short. Too tight. Too loose. The low point was coming out of a room at J Crew. I caught a glimpse in the 3-way mirror. I looked like an ice cream cone.
After a few weeks, I came to three realizations:
1.) I needed a pair with a higher-rise. Low-rised skinnies were doing a great job of digging in my stomach, giving me an awful dose of muffin top.
2.) I needed the help of shapewear. Even the highest-rise skinnies were still giving me muffin top, and Spanx helped in eliminating it and giving my tummy area a "shape" (rather than round, hence the dreaded ice cream cone affect).
3.) I needed to start dressing in a way to define a waist, even though I really don't have one. I know that sounds elementary, I had never really thought about it before.
So as a 5'2", size 6 apple, this is what worked for me:
These are awesome because they aren't super low-rise. The best part about Old Navy is that they have started offering most of their jeans in short AND petite inseams. I've found that there usually isn't too big of a difference between the actual lengths, but there is a difference in the rise. I usually stick to the "short" inseam only because I have a long torso, so I need more material in the rise. They're also not quite as blue in person, they're just more of a medium-dark wash.
The legs on these aren't quite as skinny, and they look great with flats. They are more dressy with a trouser styling and slant pockets in the back. Again, they have a higher rise (although a little lower than "The Sweethearts") but it still works.
This is probably a "no duh", but remember what I said about South Dakota being behind the times? I've tried on shapewear before (unfortunately, Spanx isn't sold locally here) and it was always a struggle. I'd wrestle it on, only for an unsightly bulge to form beneath my bra. Or, I'd find something that was comfortable and would spend all day trying to keep it from rolling every time I sat down.
I've ordered a few different Spanx products, and found that the ones that extend up to the bustline stay up with no rolling down during the day. They smooth everything out, nip in the muffin top, and they're surprisingly comfortable. I've also ordered this pair to try because I don't really need thigh shaping and find the thigh part a little constrictive, so we'll see how it goes.
Now I'm all set for Fall/Winter! If only the weather would get the hint. It was warm enough for shorts today!

If you have negative thoughts that you cannot seem to shake, if you are reliving the emotions of a past event you cannot think these away. What you can do is imagine something new, look at this fantastic picture for instance, See yourself there, breathe in the mountain clear air, feel the warmth of the sun and the cool breeze. Take yourself for a virtual walk around the place, through the fields, maybe even climb the mountain. The main thing is this...Distract yourself, do this long enough (research says at least 15 minutes, so perhaps play this twice) and your previous persistant negative thoughts will have been replaced. You may think that doing this would result in the negative thoughts coming straight back, but, you will find that very often they do not for a period of time, that gets longer and longer the more you practise this. I really hope that my music helps you to achieve some peace, this world robs us of all our time, it makes our thoughts so speeded up that slowing them down seems an impossible feat, even uncomfortable. I wish you much peace. Thank you for listening and reading this. Paul :) Image used with kind permission of PDPhoto.org
