Tip Share :: How to Add Text to a Photo

por | | 0 comentarios

One thing I love doing is jazzing up my photos with text. Adding text is a basic little action that can be applied to any photo, and help create a variety of things. Taking into consideration that not everyone has or uses the same program, I'm going to show you how to do this using two different programs: Photoshop Elements and Picnik.

Quick note: The photos below are screenshots. To view them bigger, click on them to view the details. I've written tips in pink on the photos to help.

In Photoshop Elements:
If you've never heard of it, Photoshop Elements is an Adobe program designed to help edit photos, and is installed on your computer. I think of it as the baby brother of Photoshop, but it is powerful enough to get the job done and then some. It's also a great alternative to Photoshop's big price tag (especially when you're on a budget). If you'd prefer a free program, check out GIMP - it works in a similar fashion as Photoshop Elements.

1. Open Photoshop Elements, then open your photo and make any adjustments to the brightness, contrast, etc.

2. Select the Text tool from your toolbar (mine is on the left, you may have moved yours around). The Text tool is designated by a T.

3. Place the cursor where you want it, then start typing your text. Don't worry if it's not exactly where you want it to be - you can always move it (see step 5).

4. To make adjustments to the font, highlight the text then go up to the top bar. Underneath the File/Edit/etc. bar will be a horizontal menu with all the text options. Any font you have installed on your computer will show up on the drop-down font menu, and you can make adjustments to the size by selecting one of the standard sizes or by entering your own value. Other things you're used to seeing, like bold, italic, underline, and justification will be there, too.

5. To move your text around, choose the Move tool, which looks like an arrow. A dotted box will appear around your text, and you can click and drag it with your mouse, or nudge it with the arrow buttons on your keyboard.

And you're done! That's it. Just be sure to save it (File > Save).

In Picnik:
Picnik is a web-based photo editing program/site, so there's no need to download anything. It offers both free and paid memberships, and is great if you need occasional photo editing or aren't willing to commit to buying a bigger program yet.

1. Go to www.picnik.com, and upload your photo. Once uploaded, you'll be under the Edit Tab. Make any photo adjustments necessary, and when you're ready, click on the Create Tab.

2. Once under the Create Tab, click the Text button.

3. Type in your text, then hit Add. A pop-up menu will appear. Choose the color and size, and move your text where you want it.

4. You can also change the font from the menu on the left. With Picnik, some fonts are free, others require a paid membership.

5. Once you're happy, click the Save & Share Tab, then save your photo to your computer.

See, that wasn't so bad, was it? Easy, but a good tip to know.

Is This Wild or What? Pavillion Made from 200 Recycled Speedo's

All images via www.designboom.com

This amazing pavilion designed by students at Chelsea College of Art & Design has been on show during the London Festival of Architecture for the last couple of weeks. It is made from the unlikeliest of materials, Speedo swimsuits.  What a fantastic example of the design possibilities that can be found in the upcycling process.

Sustainable Design Brief

The pavilion' is the result of a collaborative project between Chelsea College of Art & Design and the famous Speedo swimwear brand, which asked students to look at issues of sustainability, production and use of materials.  Redundant Swimsuits

Students on Chelsea's Platform 2 were given 600 'LZR racer' swimming suits to find an appropriate use for. Why the LZR racer? And why so many? Well due to recent changes in swimming competition rules this incredibly hi-tech piece of sportswear was made redundant leaving Speedo with hundreds of swimsuits they could no longer sell.

Yet somehow everyone loves it including me. This game is addicting as hell and feels much more lively than Fallout 3, there was just overall more stuff to do, more choices to make, and more people to interact with. In summary, New Vegas is silly and I love it.

Bracelet: Simply Vera by Vera Wang

One of the side effects of the unseasonably cool, damp days that we have been having here in Colorado are the allergies. Sneezy, sniffly, scratchy-eyed allergies. I've found that my Chanel eyeglasses are suddenly getting a lot more action than ever before, which is both a good thing and a bad thing. It is a good thing because I spent too much money to just have them sit like they do, collecting dust. It is a bad thing because I can't see out of them nearly as well as I can see out of my contacts, and oftentimes I will find myself missing steps while going down the stairs and bumping into random things while wearing them.

It also doesn't help that I am almost legally blind (you know the big "E" on the top of the eye chart? YEAH I CAN'T ACTUALLY SEE THAT, I'M JUST GUESSING THAT IT'S THERE) and have astigmatism, but only in one eyeball.

One of the lenses in my eyeglasses curves, the other does not. The difference isn't very noticeable while wearing contacts. When I have my glasses on, however, it's a different story- I suddenly find myself squinting and knocking into things. Or Husband finds me standing in the kitchen, swaying back and forth while looking all suspicious and shifty-eyed out of my right eyeball and going cross-eyed with the other while trying to figure out why the clock on the stove is illegible and slanted strangely towards me. Drinking too many glasses of wine before dinner? No darling readers, it's just astigmatism! Hallucinatory side effect of heavy drug use? Oh no, just good old astigmatism, at it again! Inhaled too much hairspray? Nope, just astigmat- well okay, you've got me there. Never mind.

But why drink and do drugs when you can just have a misshapen cornea and a pair of glasses you hate to wear? Seriously here, teenagers these days have it all wrong. Alllll wrong. Oh, what? What's that you say? Normal people don't have to crawl on the floor to get a glass of water from the kitchen? Huh. I don't know what you're talking about.

I am sure that I could get used to my eyeglasses if I wore them more often, but I refuse and so I just deal with it the best I can whenever my allergies do decide to attack and I can't seem to force my contacts into my crusty, bloodshot eyes. At least the interlocking Chanel "C's" on the side of my frames make me look sophisticated. Yes, I am sure that I look oh-so-very sophisticated while tumbling and tripping like a gomer.

Let's not ever forget, readers- I am a sophisticated tripping gomer with my glasses, and one that also occasionally yelps, "OH FFFFFFFART!" as she goes down.

I mean, for as much as I protest and complain over living in a house that is 98% carpet I am pretty sure that I am going to miss bouncing off of it once we replace it with hardwood floors. I don't think it is quite as easy to bounce off of a wood floor as it is carpet. Something tells me the days of Husband yelling, "TIMBER!!" as I fall down the stairs will be loooong gone; something also tells me that I will no longer be springing up after my fall to give a "TA DA!" with a small curtsy. I still might be able to get up and give a bow, sure- but probably with not nearly as much gusto as I could had carpeting caught my fall.

I simply don't think the bounce-a-bility of hardwood is the same as carpet, and this is something for us to perhaps take into consideration before moving ahead with our extensive home remodel. Make Chloe wear a helmet 24/7 and install slides instead of stairs? Noted.

So! Now that I've held you all hostage while discussing at length about how I'm really a 91-year old trapped into a 27-year old's body (did you ever have any doubt?) I have an announcement to make, ahem:

I have...A GIVEAWAY! It isn't anything huge, but it is something that I am really liking right now. Perhaps you could even say loving.

I am loving the Simply Vera for Vera Wang jewelery line at Kohl's, and I have five of these pretty flower bracelets:

Outfit Of The Day (& A Give A Way)

to give away. Yup, five- so there will be five winners!

Entering is easy- simply leave your name, one (1) thing that you are loving right now (it can be anything- a fashion item, make-up item, TV show, pro-wrestler, Golden girl, alcoholic beverage- whatever!) and an email address so I can contact you in case you win.

You can also receive an additional entry by following me; and you can receive another additional entry if you link back to this contest on your blog. Just use the "trackback" link in my comments section to link this so I can keep track.

AND to make it even more interesting, one of the winners will be the "GRAND PRIZE" winner and get some extra crap I feel like giving away. It will be surprise extra crap, like maybe a pen that Petunia has chewed on! Or maybe even Petunia herself. Or maybe...maybe...even Petunia WITH A PEN!

I'm kidding. Kind of. I almost traded Petunia for a super cute little Chinese baby today SO DON'T MESS WITH ME. This close, Petunia. THISCLOSE.

Contest ends at 12:00pm MT on Friday, August 14th. Good luck my darlings!

Rodarte! (For Target!)

por | | 0 comentarios

So in the excitement (smile & nod) of the past few weeks I managed to miss something very important. Very. Important. And quite frankly, readers, I'm a little disappointed that no one tuned me in on this little happening, a-hem.

RODARTE IS MOTHER FA-REAKING DOING A LINE FOR TARGET. RODARTE. TARGET. RODARTE + TARGET + RODARTE + TARGET = ?!!

Rodarte! (For Target!)

(It will probably be just as disappointing as all of the other Target designer collaborations but oh well, it is still exciting. Rodarte! Target!)

(RODARTE!)

(TARGET!)

(AND OMG HOLIDAY DRESSES!)

Okay so typing in capital letters and exclamation points makes me feel like I'm being all yelly and shouty and awwwesome, but I think that it probably isn't capturing the true essence of my excitement over this. The only way to really convey exactly how ecstatic I am over this collaboration (in stores December 20th!), darling readers, is to see it put into motion by a redheaded half-pint in pajamas:

The moves displayed right around minute 1:14 are especially poignant in pontificating my delectation over the Rodarte + Target collaboration. He really drives the point home- I kind of feel like tickling myself, too. Don't we all feel that way sometimes? Well done, little dude, well done.

(I think that I would totally have one of these too, by the way, if there were some sort of guarantee that it would pop out of my uterus being slightly tubby and redheaded and rhythmic. Oh! And wearing plaid pants. I don't think science has quite gotten that far yet, though. Bumm-er.)

(It'd also have to not poop and understand that it needs to be completely self-sufficient by the age of 12 and on its own by 13. We're not doing that teenager thing here, oh hellz no. Once it's done being cute, it's out the door. Come on science I am waiting.)

(Which is why I like chihuahuas. THEY ARE NEVER DONE BEING CUTE ha ha HAAAAA!)

(I...might still be popping pain meds for my tooth or lack thereof. It hurts.)

(Shut up, Chloe.)

(Shush.)

So. Uhh. I digress. Rodarte! Target! And Anna Sui arriving in stores (& online) September 13th. Fun times for Target, yes indeed.

Oh! And the Christian Siriano for Payless shoes arrived last week- pictures & a review will be up Monday!

Until then- I LIKE THAT BOOM BOOM POW. And he also really likes to spank himself. Aww, squeak sooocutegush.

Title: MAC Rodarte Collection Controversy: An Explicit Rant

I can't believe MAC had the audacity to be a part of this crap! I am so pissed by this! Rodarte claims the inspiration for the this collection came from a road trip they went on from El Paso to Marfa, a town in West Texas. Juárez is located in northern Mexico, near this part of Texas. What do you think about this entire situation? Do you think a small donation like 100K is enough to silence these people and to allow MAC and Rodarte to get away with their ignorance? Leave a comment! Love, ~sP Read here about the shocking death toll since 2008: http://blogs.reuters.com/global/2010/07/13/cuidadjuarezdeathtoll/ MAC's Latest Official Statement: ''We understand that product names in the M·A·C Rodarte collection have offended our consumers and fans. This was never our intent and we are very sorry. We continue to listen carefully to the comments we have received and have the following plans to address concerns: We are committed to donating $100,000 to a non-profit organization that has a proven, successful track-record helping women in need and that can directly improve the lives of women in Juarez in a meaningful way. We are changing the product names in the M·A·C Rodarte collection. As we have done in the past, please be assured that we will communicate details regarding our progress in this matter''. ***Disclaimer*** All (or any if mentioned) of the products featured in my video were all purchased with my own money. Week 7 :: Falling out of love

por | | 0 comentarios

This week's blogging prompt is suppose to be about how we fell out of love with a particular technique. My problem is that I don't know that I have a specific technique that I've done over and over, then got tired of and never did again. So, with that in mind, I thought I'd turn this topic around a bit and talk about falling out of love with an idea, and share some lessons learned with something that didn't work for me: consignment.

What is consignment? For artisans, it's the act of placing your work in a retail store for that store to sell. You retain ownership of your work until it's sold, and the store will take a percentage of the sale (or mark-up/adjust the selling price to include their cut). It's different than wholesaling, because the store is not purchasing your work outright; instead, you are essentially renting space. The pros to consignment is that your work is being displayed in a new venue in front of a (potentially) new audience, an audience that gets to see and hold your work (a definite benefit over online shopping). The downside to consignment is your work may not sell, and if it does, you may have to wait for payment.

My first and only experience with consignment can be classified under "not good", and it has made me gun-shy. On the surface, it was a dream offer; the shop catered to local handmade goods of all types. The reality… well, maybe the reality wasn't too far off from the dream, but I can honestly say I was too new and inexperienced. The offer came before I even established my business, and I felt pushed into having a meeting with the shop owner. So I went, even knowing this was happening too fast, and it was a truly awkward, horrible, dent-to-the-ego experience. The silver lining about it all is that I did learn a few things. Here's what I walked away with:

Lesson 1: Don't rush; it's okay to stay small for as long as possible. It's okay to take things slow, to build your stock up, to find your own personal voice, and to work on just having a business and building a customer base before branching out to other selling avenues.

Lesson 2: Experience and research are good. Take time to figure out your style, your branding, your prices, and your target audience. Take time to get your business set up, including legal and tax information. And take some time to visit stores ahead of time to see if your work would be a good match before you make an approach.

Lesson 3: Prepare, prepare, prepare. Be as prepared before meeting with the owner or manager as you can. Ask questions from fellow artist friends about what to expect when consigning, and do some research online. Go to the meeting with questions of your own, and have any paperwork ready.

Lesson 4: Trust your instincts. I was wildly uncomfortable through this whole experience, but I didn't trust my gut. To compound my anxiety, the attitude of the manager was very abrasive, very demanding, and it was a bit of a shock for my first experience. Was it her being tough or me being so green? I don't know, but now that I've had some experience selling, I feel like I'd be in a better position to approach consignment should that opportunity present itself again.

With all this being said, I also wanted to point out that just because my experience was a rough one doesn't mean other people have had a hard time consigning. My friend and fellow designer Vicki Potter from Orion Designs has been consigning for 10 years, and I asked her to share some tips for success.

Vicki's tips:

1. Make an appointment at the store with someone who is in a position to make a decision regarding whether or not they want to carry your products. This may seem obvious, but I highly recommend not doing “cold calls”. Without an appointment, you never know who will be on duty. It may be a sales clerk with no authority and you will have wasted your time. Some may ask you to leave samples. Because of the price points of my products and the one-of-a-kind nature of them, I will never do this and recommend against it.

2. Once the store owner has agreed to carry your product, there are some basic questions you need answers to. Who is responsible for lost inventory? In my experience, that is always the store. What percentage of your sales will the store keep? This can range from 30% - 50%. How often will they pay you? Most places will pay by check after the 15th of the following month. This seems to be pretty standard.

3. You can gather all of the items you plan to leave with the store and take a few pictures of the collection. This may come in handy not only to help identify missing items later, but if someone wants a pair of earrings to match a certain necklace, that photo will save you a trip to the store.

4. Now that you’ve left your product (you may want to start out with a small amount) at the store, create a file (I use a spreadsheet) identifying all of the items you left there. Use as much detail as you are comfortable with. You can start this with a copy of the consignment sheet you left at the store. I use an old fashioned 2-part receipt book and I make sure to get a signature on both copies before I leave. This signifies that they agree with the list of items you’ve left for them.

5. Each month, when you get your consignment report and sales check (hopefully), check the math and update your master list (spreadsheet). If possible, visit the store at least once a month to see how your work is displayed and to do a rough inventory check. If something looks awry, don’t be afraid to ask questions about whether or not something has sold. It may be “missing” or it may be caught in a timing situation – your visit may occur before the latest checks are written. Remember, you still own this inventory and will keep much better track of it than any store ever will, even those with computerized inventory systems.

6. What to do when a piece (or more!) is missing? Being able to produce all of your paperwork will give you a great advantage. If you can prove that you actually left the piece at the store (your signed consignment sheet), that you have not been paid for it (your consignment report from the store) and that it is not physically in the store (visual inspection), you have a good case for them to pay you for that piece.

7. Some people may say that wholesaling your work is a preferable arrangement - I say, yes and no. With wholesale, you get paid either immediately or within 30 days, whether the items have sold or not. But, the payoff may be much less, as wholesale pricing is generally 50% of retail. Many small art galleries are not in a position to make purchases of artwork. I like having my work displayed in those types of stores and am willing to go through the trouble of consignment to do so. One other never discussed part of wholesaling is this – what if your items don’t sell? With consignment, you can always trade-out one piece for another. When your items are owned outright by the store, they may end up in a sale basket in the back corner after a few months. Ask me how I know. It doesn’t feel very good.

BIG thanks to Vicki for taking the time to share her knowledge! If you're thinking about consignment, I hope this helps give a well-rounded view of what to expect. Not all experiences are as bad as mine was, and consignment can be a steady revenue source. If you currently consign with a shop or two, I'd love to hear your own stories!

Nature Nut Necklace

por | | 0 comentarios

Heart Shaped Nut Beads

I recently ordered some interesting heart-shaped nut beads on sale. I wasn’t sure at the time what I was going to do with them, but I was determined to try them out. When I opened the package and saw the beads in person, all I could think of was fringe.

The Inspiration:

I let the idea of adding fringe to the nut beads marinate for awhile. Eventually, I decided that they would be great as the focal points at either end of a lariat necklace. For the base of the necklace, I wanted something that was simple and organic, to go with the natural quality of the heart-shaped nuts.

The Beads:

The most obvious color choice for a nature theme is green, so I chose a transparent green mixture. I like the way the colors blend together, creating a natural-looking texture. I also grabbed some olive green 8/o’s, and some glass teardrops in turquoise Picasso and smoked topaz luster.

Nature Beads

I really love the contrast of orange against green, so I also selected some foil-lined orange 6/o seed beads as accents. They fit in nicely with the greens and browns, perhaps mimicking orchids or leaves. With the summer heat getting ever more intense, it seems appropriate to make something that looks right at home in a sweltering jungle.

The Beadwork:

For a simple, light necklace, I used spiral rope with the 8/o seed beads at the core. The green 11/o’s create a swirling vine, with orange and olive beads throughout. Towards the ends of the rope, I began adding the drops. I also decided to add some pretty red and brown glass leaves.

Nature Nut Lariat Necklace

The fringe beneath each nut bead is made up of seed beads and drops, with green and black spade-shaped drops at each end. The necklace feels very light and playful, even though it was inspired by a hot, humid rainforest.

One of the fundamental elements of Buddhism is the doctrine of reincarnation. Human beings die and are reborn over and over again because they fail to see things clearly and wake up to the spiritual emptiness which lies behind the phenomenal world. It is this false perception of the nature of things that leads to wrong thinking and wrong behavior, which in turn causes this painful cycle of death and rebirth. “Style is the mind skating circles around itself as it moves forward”

por | | 0 comentarios

It should probably come as absolutely no shock to anyone that South Dakota can be a little behind the times. This was never so apparent as I stood in line at the Fleet Foxes concert in Minneapolis. I thought I looked pretty smart clad in my trouser jeans. Yeah, smart for 2005.

I knew that straight legged and skinny jeans have been in style for a few years now and I did a pretty good job resisting. For one, I had a job that discouraged any sort of creative styling (khakis and vneck sweaters were my uniform lest my co-workers think I was showing off). For two...I'm an apple. I gain all my weight in my stomach/back (and occasionally boobs). I have skinny little chicken legs and no ass. I had no business being anywhere around a pair of skinny jeans.

But standing in line, surrounded by all sorts of cute and hip chicks of all sizes rocking the skinnies...suddenly I wanted a pair, too. And since I recently quit my staid job, I could now dress however I damn well pleased.

The road to the perfect skinnies was tough. I tried on pairs every where I went. H&M, GAP, Old Navy, J Crew, Express. Nothing worked. They were too long. Too short. Too tight. Too loose. The low point was coming out of a room at J Crew. I caught a glimpse in the 3-way mirror. I looked like an ice cream cone.

After a few weeks, I came to three realizations:

1.) I needed a pair with a higher-rise. Low-rised skinnies were doing a great job of digging in my stomach, giving me an awful dose of muffin top.

2.) I needed the help of shapewear. Even the highest-rise skinnies were still giving me muffin top, and Spanx helped in eliminating it and giving my tummy area a "shape" (rather than round, hence the dreaded ice cream cone affect).

3.) I needed to start dressing in a way to define a waist, even though I really don't have one. I know that sounds elementary, I had never really thought about it before.

So as a 5'2", size 6 apple, this is what worked for me:

“Style is the mind skating circles around itself as it moves forward”

Women's Classic Rise Skinny - "The Sweetheart" Jeans

These are awesome because they aren't super low-rise. The best part about Old Navy is that they have started offering most of their jeans in short AND petite inseams. I've found that there usually isn't too big of a difference between the actual lengths, but there is a difference in the rise. I usually stick to the "short" inseam only because I have a long torso, so I need more material in the rise. They're also not quite as blue in person, they're just more of a medium-dark wash.

Women's Mid-Rise Straight - "The Flirt" Jeans

The legs on these aren't quite as skinny, and they look great with flats. They are more dressy with a trouser styling and slant pockets in the back. Again, they have a higher rise (although a little lower than "The Sweethearts") but it still works.

Spanx- Higher Power

This is probably a "no duh", but remember what I said about South Dakota being behind the times? I've tried on shapewear before (unfortunately, Spanx isn't sold locally here) and it was always a struggle. I'd wrestle it on, only for an unsightly bulge to form beneath my bra. Or, I'd find something that was comfortable and would spend all day trying to keep it from rolling every time I sat down.

I've ordered a few different Spanx products, and found that the ones that extend up to the bustline stay up with no rolling down during the day. They smooth everything out, nip in the muffin top, and they're surprisingly comfortable. I've also ordered this pair to try because I don't really need thigh shaping and find the thigh part a little constrictive, so we'll see how it goes.

Now I'm all set for Fall/Winter! If only the weather would get the hint. It was warm enough for shorts today!

Title: New style Theta brainwave relaxing instrumental by Paul Collier "Can you Imagine?" (55)

Enjoy smooth relaxing beautiful music, no words, a gentle instrumental, Take a break from your busy life Can you Imagine? by Paul Collier (C) 2010 (includes embedded Theta binaural tones) NEW!!! mp3 Download NOW OUT only from... http://www.PaulFromStokeUK.com This music contains brainwave entrainment technology, for more information on this cllick here... http://www.transparentcorp.com/special/entrainment.php?c=8188815 Did you know you can only feel one emotion at a time, did you know that you can only think of one thing at a time? and more importantly do you know what this means in terms of achieving a healthy mind and maintainging a healthy mind? If you have negative thoughts that you cannot seem to shake, if you are reliving the emotions of a past event you cannot think these away. What you can do is imagine something new, look at this fantastic picture for instance, See yourself there, breathe in the mountain clear air, feel the warmth of the sun and the cool breeze. Take yourself for a virtual walk around the place, through the fields, maybe even climb the mountain. The main thing is this...Distract yourself, do this long enough (research says at least 15 minutes, so perhaps play this twice) and your previous persistant negative thoughts will have been replaced. You may think that doing this would result in the negative thoughts coming straight back, but, you will find that very often they do not for a period of time, that gets longer and longer the more you practise this. I really hope that my music helps you to achieve some peace, this world robs us of all our time, it makes our thoughts so speeded up that slowing them down seems an impossible feat, even uncomfortable. I wish you much peace. Thank you for listening and reading this. Paul :) Image used with kind permission of PDPhoto.org
