Bead Color Triads: Primary Colors

por | | 0 comentarios

Primary Colours

Ask anyone that made it through kindergarten what the three primary colors are, and there’s probably a 99.9% chance that they’ll say “Red, Yellow and Blue”. And while that answer is true, it’s not the whole truth. It’s only about a third of the truth.

Printers, artists, and scientists know that there are other correct answers to that question, depending on what type of color you mean. Anyone that has actually tried to mix red, yellow and blue paint knows that it doesn't actually work the way it does in preschool cartoons.

In honor of the back to school season, and art teachers everywhere, I thought it would be fun to do things a little differently this month. We’re going to look at beads in three different primary color palettes, and perhaps compare how well each one would look in a finished piece.

Red Yellow Blue Bead Palette

Building Blocks is the first group of beads that I made, so named because I can’t help but see Lego bricks when I look at those blue, boxy Miyuki hexes. The effect is even stronger with transparent ruby seed beads and yellow cat’s eyes nearby. No matter what the brightness or finish is, something about red, yellow and blue together always brings on memories of crayons and building blocks.

Red Green Blue Bead Palette

Shattered Light turned out to be a surprisingly irresistible palette. I’m usually not a fan of red and green together. I find that it either looks unsophisticated, or that the red is far too orange, and the combination looks garish. But here, the cobalt seed beads seem to anchor the other colors, rein them in and make them work together. The Czech rice beads and TOHO triangles don’t even have a hint of Christmasiness with blue there to keep things under control.

Magenta Yellow Cyan Bead Palette

Pop Print somehow seems even more youthful than the crayon-colors, with almost fluorescent shades of magenta, yellow and cyan blue. I started with the tagua slice, which is a bit muted, but still leans far enough on the darker side of bubblegum to qualify for this palette. The dyed shell rectangles and 11/o seed beads seem to look tropical and candy-like at the same time. All this palette needs is a pair of headphones, and you’ve got the makings of a teenaged ensemble from recent, but simpler times.

So, if you had to choose just one of these primary color palettes - with any bead type - which would it be?

Tip Share :: How to Add Text to a Photo

por | | 0 comentarios

One thing I love doing is jazzing up my photos with text. Adding text is a basic little action that can be applied to any photo, and help create a variety of things. Taking into consideration that not everyone has or uses the same program, I'm going to show you how to do this using two different programs: Photoshop Elements and Picnik.

Quick note: The photos below are screenshots. To view them bigger, click on them to view the details. I've written tips in pink on the photos to help.

In Photoshop Elements:
If you've never heard of it, Photoshop Elements is an Adobe program designed to help edit photos, and is installed on your computer. I think of it as the baby brother of Photoshop, but it is powerful enough to get the job done and then some. It's also a great alternative to Photoshop's big price tag (especially when you're on a budget). If you'd prefer a free program, check out GIMP - it works in a similar fashion as Photoshop Elements.

1. Open Photoshop Elements, then open your photo and make any adjustments to the brightness, contrast, etc.

2. Select the Text tool from your toolbar (mine is on the left, you may have moved yours around). The Text tool is designated by a T.

3. Place the cursor where you want it, then start typing your text. Don't worry if it's not exactly where you want it to be - you can always move it (see step 5).

4. To make adjustments to the font, highlight the text then go up to the top bar. Underneath the File/Edit/etc. bar will be a horizontal menu with all the text options. Any font you have installed on your computer will show up on the drop-down font menu, and you can make adjustments to the size by selecting one of the standard sizes or by entering your own value. Other things you're used to seeing, like bold, italic, underline, and justification will be there, too.

5. To move your text around, choose the Move tool, which looks like an arrow. A dotted box will appear around your text, and you can click and drag it with your mouse, or nudge it with the arrow buttons on your keyboard.

And you're done! That's it. Just be sure to save it (File > Save).

In Picnik:
Picnik is a web-based photo editing program/site, so there's no need to download anything. It offers both free and paid memberships, and is great if you need occasional photo editing or aren't willing to commit to buying a bigger program yet.

1. Go to www.picnik.com, and upload your photo. Once uploaded, you'll be under the Edit Tab. Make any photo adjustments necessary, and when you're ready, click on the Create Tab.

2. Once under the Create Tab, click the Text button.

3. Type in your text, then hit Add. A pop-up menu will appear. Choose the color and size, and move your text where you want it.

4. You can also change the font from the menu on the left. With Picnik, some fonts are free, others require a paid membership.

5. Once you're happy, click the Save & Share Tab, then save your photo to your computer.

See, that wasn't so bad, was it? Easy, but a good tip to know.

I'm having a hard time believing that July is over. Wha? Time has been zooming along over here, what about you? It's been a good month, but a crazy one for me as I am putting the finishing touches on my e-class (registration ends tomorrow, by the way!! If you're looking to learn more about color, come join me).

Here's a few things you might have missed this week:

Friday Freebie from 74 Lime Lane: Monthly Calendar for August

DIY printed paper garlands tutorial, via Going Home to Roost

Missed the Renegade Craft Fair in LA (me, too)? Dani from Oh, Hello Friend recaps it here and here.

Awesome apothecary label downloads via Just Something I Made

Fancy doing some digital scrapbooking? Oscraps has some great special offers this weekend, including 2 free alpha sets from Danielle Young Designs. And Paislee Press just released a new layout called Press Packet No. 2 - it's on sale!

Have you heard about The Creative Empire? It's a new artist/business forum created by Megan Auman of Crafting an MBA and Tara Gentile of Scoutie Girl where creatives can go for support. Loving what I've found so far.

Happy weekending!

Shop Update :: 5/19/2010

por | | 0 comentarios

As you read this, I'll already be on my way to California, ready to bask in the sunshine. I can't even tell you how frantic my mind and thoughts have been the last few weeks, so this is a good thing. I need a tiny bit of down time with some good friends and an adorable baby, and am hoping to come back fresh and full of inspiration.

So, if you popped in today to see an actual shop update, all I have to offer is this:

I'm going to try something new, and leave my shop open while I'm gone. I will have access to respond to any questions that may come up, but shipping won't occur till I get back.

As for my lovely blog, I'm not going to let you miss me. I'm scheduling posts, but I will apologize in advance if some links lead to sold items. Stop back tomorrow and Friday for some California-inspired posts! As for Monday... I'll be sharing what my studio looks like. It'll be riveting, I'm sure.

In case you're reading this via a feedburner or a reader, and the nifty note image isn't visible, it says:
Quick note: I will be away from May 19th to May 25th. The shop will remain open, but response times will be slower than usual. Any orders placed during this time will be shipped starting May 26th. Thanks! -Brandi
