Last week, I shared how I started a pair of earrings. Here's the finished result!
Introducing my Carolina Earrings. These feature gorgeous artisan borosilicate beads from Patricia Hernandez, olive green vesuvanite briolettes, blue topaz rondelles, tiny faceted amethyst briolettes, and red onyx rondelles.
In my post last week, I showed just the vesuvanite, blue topaz, and red onyx beads. After some playing around, I decided to add in the amethyst. I had originally seen some purple in the boro beads, and decided this color scheme needed a little extra punch. What do you think?

One thing I love doing is jazzing up my photos with text. Adding text is a basic little action that can be applied to any photo, and help create a variety of things. Taking into consideration that not everyone has or uses the same program, I'm going to show you how to do this using two different programs: Photoshop Elements and Picnik.
Quick note: The photos below are screenshots. To view them bigger, click on them to view the details. I've written tips in pink on the photos to help.
In Photoshop Elements: If you've never heard of it, Photoshop Elements is an Adobe program designed to help edit photos, and is installed on your computer. I think of it as the baby brother of Photoshop, but it is powerful enough to get the job done and then some. It's also a great alternative to Photoshop's big price tag (especially when you're on a budget). If you'd prefer a free program, check out GIMP - it works in a similar fashion as Photoshop Elements.
1. Open Photoshop Elements, then open your photo and make any adjustments to the brightness, contrast, etc.
2. Select the Text tool from your toolbar (mine is on the left, you may have moved yours around). The Text tool is designated by a T.
3. Place the cursor where you want it, then start typing your text. Don't worry if it's not exactly where you want it to be - you can always move it (see step 5).
4. To make adjustments to the font, highlight the text then go up to the top bar. Underneath the File/Edit/etc. bar will be a horizontal menu with all the text options. Any font you have installed on your computer will show up on the drop-down font menu, and you can make adjustments to the size by selecting one of the standard sizes or by entering your own value. Other things you're used to seeing, like bold, italic, underline, and justification will be there, too.
5. To move your text around, choose the Move tool, which looks like an arrow. A dotted box will appear around your text, and you can click and drag it with your mouse, or nudge it with the arrow buttons on your keyboard.
And you're done! That's it. Just be sure to save it (File > Save).
In Picnik: Picnik is a web-based photo editing program/site, so there's no need to download anything. It offers both free and paid memberships, and is great if you need occasional photo editing or aren't willing to commit to buying a bigger program yet.
1. Go to www.picnik.com, and upload your photo. Once uploaded, you'll be under the Edit Tab. Make any photo adjustments necessary, and when you're ready, click on the Create Tab.
2. Once under the Create Tab, click the Text button.
3. Type in your text, then hit Add. A pop-up menu will appear. Choose the color and size, and move your text where you want it.
4. You can also change the font from the menu on the left. With Picnik, some fonts are free, others require a paid membership.
5. Once you're happy, click the Save & Share Tab, then save your photo to your computer.
See, that wasn't so bad, was it? Easy, but a good tip to know.

I should never admit this.... I grew up on Elvis. Everyone else was into the grunge bands when I was still in the 50's. And, I wanted to be Ann Margaret, after seeing her in a few of the Elvis films . . . riding in a convertible with a scarf around her perfectly coiffed hair ... so, when I came across this site: Elvis News .... I stopped, read and smiled. It's got a lot of interesting tidbits.
Did you know that it was Valentine's day 1954 when Colonel Parker first saw Elvis perform live on stage? That Valentine's Day 1957, is when Cliff Gleaves introduced Elvis to Anita Wood? or, that it was Valentine's Day 1972 when Red West told Elvis that Priscilla was having an affair with Mike Stone? That Lisa Marie turned 40 on February 1st...
When Zeus banished the Titans to Tartarus in the Greek myth, the giants took their revenge by sending forth their monstrous children to terrorize the realm of the new gods. Gaia gave birth to the serpent Typhon, and though he would also be defeated by Zeus, he was able to wreak much havoc on the world, and sired three more terrible creatues: Cerberus, Hydra and Chimera.
These three-headed beasts are well known in Greek legends, and are still favorite monsters in many fantasy stories. The least well known is the Chimera, though it is arguably the most interesting of Typhons children. With the heads of a dragon, a lion, and a goat, this monster is often depicted as female. In some versions of the legend, the Chimera was the mother of the Sphinx.
In modern art and stories, the anatomy of the Chimera has taken on many different forms. A Chimeric Creature is a blending of three monsters and animals, sometimes with multiple heads, and often bearing the wings and tail of a dragon.
The Inspiration:
Before I took up bead weaving, I collected vintage acrylic and lucite beads, and used them to create tapestries of bead strands to decorate my home. After many moves and encounters with kids, some of them are a bit disheveled. One that has survived completely intact is made entirely with red and black beads. Its one of my favorites.
Like any decoration that hangs around for a long time, I had started to take my bead tapestries for granted. The red and black strands caught my attention one day, and I wanted to refresh my interest by making a piece of jewelry with the same elements. When I thought of the red and black together, I thought it would be fun to create a tribute to the mythical Chimera, using the traditional three headed version as inspiration.
The Beads:
I started with three shades of 11/0 seed beads - light amber for the lion, Siam ruby for the dragon, and opaque black for the goat. For accents, I combined two mixtures of Fire Designs Furnace Glass beads - Queen of Hearts and Strawberry Shortcake. I selected my favorites in red, black and brown from this new mixture. I had a hard time choosing, and took a long while to create a balance between the single colored beads, and those with striped accents. I also added mixed strands of Czech fire polish beads in amber, jet and garnet, and a homemade mixture of hex cuts and Toho triangles in my Chimeric color palette.
The Beadwork:
I have always been a huge admirer of Margie Deebs Rainforest Cascade necklace, with its luscious strands of beads. I think most bead lovers can relate to the intense craving that thick strands of beads can induce. Although I love to look at them, Im usually reluctant to use bare seed bead strands in my designs. My seed beads call out to be woven! So I sketched out a design that would have the same cascading feel that I liked, but used the tiny beads in a more structured way.
To create a pendant, I used black hex cuts to make a tapered base, then added 17 strands of wide fringe. Each of the 17 strands ends with a cane glass bead, and has long fronds of seed beads ending with hex cuts or fire polish beads. To add some depth to the fringe, I mixed my original three seed bead colors with color-lined seed beads in dark amber brown, mauve and jet black. The lion colored fringe is at the center, so that the outer colors match up with the tubular peyote rope. I love the way the wide fringe has elements of both beadweaving and multi-strand, and the furnace glass adds just the right amount of texture. I almost dont want to let this piece go!
I would like to thank Artbeads.com for providing the Fire Designs beads used in this piece. Inspirational Beading has not received paid compensation for including Artbeads.com products or reviews in this blog post. I have shared my honest opinions about the products used in this design.
