Last week, I shared how I started a pair of earrings. Here's the finished result!
Introducing my Carolina Earrings. These feature gorgeous artisan borosilicate beads from Patricia Hernandez, olive green vesuvanite briolettes, blue topaz rondelles, tiny faceted amethyst briolettes, and red onyx rondelles.
In my post last week, I showed just the vesuvanite, blue topaz, and red onyx beads. After some playing around, I decided to add in the amethyst. I had originally seen some purple in the boro beads, and decided this color scheme needed a little extra punch. What do you think?

No matter how many beading techniques we learn, there will always be one or two that we return to again and again. Perhaps they have a look or feel that we really enjoy, or work well with our favorite beads. Sometimes the best stitches are the ones that we can just sit back and weave with ease, and they are the ones that make beading a relaxing pastime.
Today, my guest is Virginia of Goblins Market, who shares the origins of her favorite beading technique.
Inspirational Beading: What is your all time favorite beading or jewelry technique?
Virginia: It is so hard to choose a favorite. I love to make netted beaded fringes on scarves and I love to work in circular right angle weave.
Inspirational Beading: How do you first learn to use this technique?
Virginia: I worked out netted fringe on my own but learned the stitch I use to create a foundation row from a Bead & Button magazine in the early 1990's. I learned circular right angle weave from a Marcia DeCoster article in Bead & Button several years ago.
Inspirational Beading: Of all the creations youve made with this technique, which one is your favorite?
Virginia: I think my favorite creation so far is a scarf I made for a friend's daughter last spring. It was made with an orchid purple silk/rayon velvet that I dyed and overdyed myself, and edged with a gorgeous netted fringe. I used some yummy green table cuts for the fringe finials.
I really enjoyed working with such rich colors on that sumptuous velvet surface. I also really enjoy knowing that the recipient will value this scarf for a long time - both as a gift from her dad and something hand made by me. I hope her daughters will enjoy it as much as she does! I love to work on custom orders - especially when they involve both fiber and beads!
Inspirational Beading: Can you share any tips for getting started with this method?
Virginia: When working with a beaded fringe, it is very important to have a sturdy, well spaced foundation row. I'm working on creating a tutorial to offer in my shop on creating a foundation row - I may get it done by January 2011. (And that may be a very optimistic estimate!)
The foundation row secures the fringe to the fabric and is the basis for the spacing of your fringe. Getting that on neatly is the first important step. The next challenge with beaded fringe is to work with a fairly long thread and to remember to tie off often. The length of thread I work with is often prone to tangling, especially since I work with a doubled thread for strength.
Be patient. Never tug on a knot. Use your needle to loosen knots. Go slowly and work in a position and place that allows you to see your work clearly. Eventually you will find a way to hold the thread apart from itself with your fingers as you stitch. This will help you minimize knots and go faster.
I always tie off after every third section of netting or after every 4 or 5 single strands. This minimizes bead loss and re-working time if the unthinkable happens to your scarf and the fringe gets broken. I also always include a small vial of repair beads for these velvet scarves. They may travel a very long time in their lifetimes and I want their owners to be able to easily find the necessary beads for a repair, should that ever be needed.
Inspirational Beading: Do you have a favorite material to use it with?
Virginia: Silk Velvet! I also put simpler beaded fringes on some of my other hand painted and dyed scarves but velvet and silk dupion are the only fabrics I've worked with so far that really can carry the weight and luxury of a full netted fringe really convincingly.
Inspirational Beading: If someone had to choose to learn only one technique, would you recommend this one?
Virginia: I would recommend that they learn the foundation stitch. Once one has learned to put the foundation row on neatly and without significant trouble with tangles, they will have worked with the beads and the fabric enough to begin making intuitive guesses about how they can add onto and embellish that basic foundation. The foundation row lends itself very nicely to peyote stitch - I have added solid peyote strips to the bottoms of scarves instead of dangling fringes in the past to very good effect! - and to many variations of fringes.
Inspirational Beading: In your opinion, what is the best place for beginners to learn this technique?
Virginia: I am a "manipulative" and visual learner, so learning from illustrations in a magazine works well for me. (That's a good thing because we live very far from any large city with an active beading guild!) Anyone who is an auditory learner should look for a teacher, a class or a guild to learn from.
I occasionally teach a "Beading on the Fringe" class on applying fringe to a scarf or ribbon; some of my students pick up the techniques just by looking at my illustrations. Others need to see me walk through the steps several times and still others need me to talk them through it step by step. It all depends on how your brain processes information best.

Title: Jon Fitch learns some technique from Chris Fleeger
I (Jon Fitch) took some footage of All-American Purdue University wrestler, Chris Fleager, before I moved to California in 2003. He showed me some of his favorite techniques. I slowed them down so you can see the detail in his movements.
In this video, Tattered Angels Education Coordinator Liz Hicks shares with you her favorite techniques with altering cardboard. She also uses the brand new and fun Glimmer Glam to give her project that extra little sparkle.
I can see the woman I want to be, and the life I want to lead, and sometimes it's just not clear to me how to get there.
I'm taking Kelly Rae's Flying Lessons e-course right now, and to say I'm feeling overwhelmed is an understatement. There were times last week (and the week before, and the week before that) where I questioned the sanity in taking two e-courses back to back on top of trying to learn how to make a website (because I just can't afford to pay someone, though if I could, I so would), write an e-course/e-book of my own, run a jewelry business, blog, network, and, you know, be a good sister, friend, daughter, auntie. Oh, and do laundry.
There were times when I said, yep, I'm nuts. And there will be more of those moments.
There were times when I cried in frustration. And I probably will again.
I've been pushing my limits, and a big part of me is scared of breaking apart like I did last fall. Depression isn't fun, it isn't easy, and I don't want to go back there.
But then I had an ah-ha moment that Oprah's always talking about last Friday, thanks to Kelly Rae's class. My moment had pretty much nothing to do with that day's class topic, but it came from Kelly Rae acknowledging she was feeling overwhelmed. Here's what it was for me (it's a multi-part ah-ha moment):
It started with: I'm nowhere near where I was last fall. I've outgrown it. (And I felt the pressure lift a little.)
Then moved to: Pushing my limits is a good thing, a healthy thing. And so is a day off. (A little more.)
And finished with: It's not that I'm miserable, it's that I'm uncomfortable. And that's okay. (Deep breath.)
My ah-ha moment showed me that this is all a part of the process of evolving. I'm learning that I can acknowledge the overwhelming feelings without taking it into me. I'm learning that it's okay to feel overwhelmed in the first place. I recognize I'm going through a creative growth spurt, so it's okay to feel uncomfortable - this is pretty much creative puberty. And like puberty, it'll end eventually, right?

It seems like I have now moved to phase II of the flu: the bad coughing. It's a harsh, dry cough, and I can't stop COUGHING! And I still feel like shit. And now my abdominal muscles are screaming because I've been coughing for 24 hours straight. Oh lord, this sucks.
I took a bunch of Nyquil earlier this evening, and it did to me what every other alcoholic beverage does to me- I zonked out for about an hour. Then I woke back up, wide awake but still half drunk. And have no fear, my darlings- I didn't OD on the Nyquil. I am so pathetic in my non-drinking ways that 2 tablespoons of Nyquil makes me buzz. Yeeeah.
So here I am. It's 2:35 AM, and I decided to come sit in front of the computer for a bit so I wouldn't wake up Husband with my coughing. And poor Husband- he took very good care of me this weekend. He was like a nurse, wielding boxes of tissues and water and chicken noodle soup. Oh, and also the surprise of Season One of Mad Men on DVD, so I can watch it while I'm feeling feeble.
He's the best. He usually ignores me when I'm sick. He's a typical guy: guys like to "fix" things, and there is no fixing a Lupus flare. There's nothing he can do for me when I'm sick from something Lupus-related except to pat my head and just let me sleep. So I think he's kind of excited that he actually knows what to do for a cold. Or maybe he knows that I'm highly contagious and that I will likely be taking care of him a few days from now. Hmm, maybe.
I just have a few things to post. I will start with the most important: it appears that Revolve Clothing just added a bunch of new markdowns to their sale section. Hooray! Use code "NOTCOTLOVESREVOLVE" for an additional 25% off.
And since I can never resist a sale, I grabbed a few things. I wonder if this is similar to drunk shopping. I am shopping while hopped up on too much cold medication, and it's kind of sad, but oh well whatever. That "SUBMIT" button is just so much easier to press when you are too tired/too overly-medicated to think about it. First are the L.A.M.B. Mitaka's in Gray:
They ended up being $120 and some change after discounts, down from $330.o0. Oh hells to the yes. I had originally wanted these babies, the L.A.M.B. Fen Button Pumps in Red, but my size was gone. Bummer:
So pretty. I'm sad I couldn't get them. I just love platform pumps. I have finicky feet that typically hate high heels (even though I love them so!) but platforms really help, so there isn't so much strain between the heel and the ball of the foot. They make the higher heels wearable for me, and being that I'm only 5'2"- I need all the extra height I can get.
And they ended up being around $49.00 after discounts, down from $129.
And last but not least- I received the Testament top from Revolve on Thursday and quickly snapped a pic that day. It's a darling little top- and I can't believe I snagged it for only $32:
Back I go to bed, so I can cough all over husband some more. Wee!
Spring is a time of flowers, not only because gardens and wild patches everywhere are blooming, but also because there are so many flower-friendly holidays. Valentines Day, Easter, and Mothers Day are often considered an occasion to buy a bouquet, but many people dont know the environmental and social impact of the gift they are giving.
The cut flower industry that provides so many beautiful bunches of flowers for consumers is about as natural as a plastics factory. While many companies try to compare the carbon footprint of greenhouse flowers vs. imported ones, other issues are overlooked. The perfection of a store-bought flower is achieved through the use of pesticides - some of which are banned in many countries - and irrigation. Water is diverted from the farms and villages that desperately need it, and used to feed luxury flowers that are unlikely to provide food for pollinating insects, let alone humans.
Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to give and enjoy flowers, while giving Mother Nature a break, too. Buying locally grown, in season flowers is one way to do it. And if you cant grow your own flowers, you can always make them. This weeks Poster Sketch features a collection of handmade flowers that are free of DDT, and will never wilt.

Title: AADBSK Season 3 - 3rd Asia Tour MIROTIC Poster Photo Sketch
Guess who got stuck in a blizzard that dumped more than a foot of snow on the East Coast last weekend? That'd be me.
Luckily, I didn't have to sit at the airport for days on end. I got a few extra days at home with the kiddos, which we spent trying to build a wonky snowman (no, I didn't get a photo and I'm kicking myself for it), going to see Tangled, and having pajama day after pajama day. But I am so glad to be home.
I swear I'm not a grinch, but the holidays aren't really my favorite part of the year. It's always so busy and stressful that I come out the other side wishing for a vacation from my vacation. This year was even worse, as my sister's house is being renovated, so there were workers in the house right at 8am (seriously, you could set an alarm by these guys - they were prompt) before and after the holidays. So, there wasn't a lot of baking or decorating or sleeping in, and I missed that; I did get to spend lots of one-on-one time with my sister, though, which was awesome, and I made my first wreath (I'll share photos soon). Other than that, if you've never lived or dealt with a renovation, I can sum up the process in three words: dusty and noisy.
I tried to come home a few days early to relax, but then a blizzard came along and there went my plans. Oh, and I threw out my back doing I don't know what at the very beginning of my trip, so the holidays this year were literally painful for me. 90% of the photos I took are blurry because it hurt to lift the camera (oh, well), but I did get these shots. What they don't show are the 50mph winds and pelting snow. But it sure looked nice from inside!
My plans for New Year's Eve is to flop on the couch and do absolutely nothing but watch TV and eat junk food. How about you? How was everyone's Christmas?

Title: THE BEATLES - ALL MY LOVING ( CLOSE YOUR EYES )
Video Clip created by Alexandros Molfessis , for Rafael
I haven't mention it before, but I'm taking an e-class with Tara about breaking through and telling my own story. Last week, part of our assignment was to list our fears, what we think might be holding us back. Coupled with Tara's post about fear over on Scoutie Girl, the idea of fear has been on my mind the last few days.
My first instinct is to say I don't have any fears to break through when telling my story like others do. That what I need is not necessarily a life cheerleader (though those are nice!), but a life editor to help me focus all my dreams and goals into one cohesive journey. But after reading Tara's post about fear, I realized that's not true.
My fear is not the fear of failure. It's there, but I've failed at things before, so that particular fear is pretty tiny and easily ignored. That surprises me since I don't have a solid Plan B if I walk away from Catie's Blue today or tomorrow; I've put the last three years of my life into this business, spending waking moments working working working, and sleeping moments dreaming of new projects (true story - my entire Drop of Color series came from a dream). Do I want to succeed? Absolutely! But the fear of failure doesn't hold me back.
No, my fear is of not living up to my potential and finding out that I'm not as good as I think I am.
My fear has led to me reading any crafty business post I can find, obsessing over techniques and how I can make them my own, straining to figure out how to be more financially sound, hurrying to find my place in a big artsy world. I think these manifestations are easy to understand (and something I think most small crafty business owners can relate to), but why am I so fixated on being good enough or better? Am I still looking for approval from peers, friends, family? I feel like I've been successful so far, but is that not enough? Truthfully, no. After I thought about it all weekend, I realized, that no, it's not enough.
Before you think I'm incredibly arrogant or ungrateful, let me explain. I do feel grateful for every single order, every. single. one. But I have some pretty big dreams, and haven't yet crossed off enough on my goal list. There's still more to learn! There's still more I can do. I can feel it, living inside me. I can't ignore it because it has a really loud voice (and, strangely, sounds like every single person in my life who has had an influence on me, all at the same time). I think I'm always going to be looking for ways to improve, things I can do better, ways to grow. I don't know that I can ever just settle, and I think that's okay. I can be grateful and hungry at the same time, can't I?
I've mentioned goals before, so let me add one more that I've had since last fall, something I haven't shared with anyone yet: I want to write an ebook on color to help visual artists, but my fear has me thinking I might not be good enough to do it. Would anyone want to read it? What if it's not as helpful as I think? This on top of worries like: Do sales equal validity? If I sell more, will I be more respected, more appealing as a jewelry designer? Will people like what I'm creating, or have I not yet gotten my story across?
I don't have any concrete answers to those questions, just faith, gratitude, and a determination in spite of my fear. I'm going to own it, and name him Marco. As scary as it is for me to acknowledge Marco, and to share him here on my blog, I think it's necessary to respect him as valid. The trick is not let his voice take over my brain and drown out my own.
