Holy shmoly cow. It's been a year, readers. A whole year! And close to 500 posts and nearly 600 followers on Blogger (plus how ever many more of you follow me by other means, I know you're out there!). What can I say? I'm impressed. What started as a little warbling venture about some photos of a dog that didn't belong to me has now turned into this.
Way to go, me. I AM AWESOME.
Oh! And you are all awesome, too. And to say thanks to all of you, I'm doing another giveaway. There will be just one winner this time (sorry guys) and a pretty simple prize because frankly, I'm a bit too zonked at the moment to do better. And hey now, let's get something straight here- YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO BE FOLLOWING MY BLOG 'CUZ YOU LIKE ME. NOT 'CUZ I GIVE YOU THINGS.
OH! OHHH!!!! AND it's my birthday in almost a week (on the 12th readers, ahem) (yes, the original Columbus Day) (and man, that caused total confusion for me as a child because I'd be all, "Okay now who exactly is this Christopher Columbo person I share my birthday with?" and my mom would be all, "I ALREADY TOLD YOU, YOU DON'T SHARE YOUR BIRTHDAY WITH HIM." and then I'd be all, "Oh that's good because I already hafta share every other single birthday with SOMEONE and people keep taking the easy way out and giving us crappy board games to share as gifts because OH-HA-HA-HA isn't that funny, twins can play board games together and I DON'T WANT TO SHARE MY STUPID BOARD GAME WITH A THIRD PERSON." and my mom would raise her eyebrow at me and then I'd think to myself, "But huh, I thought we only have holidays if someone has a birthday, like Christmas. Christmas is baby Jesus's birthday and Easter is the Easter Bunny's birthday so how did this dude get a holiday if it isn't his birthday?") but uh anyway, here I am, giving things toyou a week before my birthday. Something is a bit screwy with this picture, huh.
Perhaps more than you will ever know, my dears.
But it's fun to give you guys things because you give me things in return. Like your love. And pictures of your pet chihuahuas dressed up in their Halloween costumes (Ha! Thanks again, Rosa!). Blogging might be the most time-sucking, non-money-making job ever...but I rather dig it. Perhaps I will even stick around for another year.
Because what's a birthday or anniversary without a (cup)cake or two? Exactly. You get your choice of flavors- the complete list of all 21 flavors to choose from is on the Etsy website. And yes, you read that right- with cupcake names like "OMG- Oh My Ganache!" and "Yum Blonde In a Pink Skirt", you can't go wrong. They're all insanely good.
Entering the giveaway is easy- simply post a comment with your name and email address. That's it! There can be only one entry per commenter (multiple comments will be deleted!) and the giveaway will end promptly Friday evening at 9pm MT. The winner will be notified by email for their mailing address and so they can choose their cupcake flavors.
Easy peasy, that's it!
Thanks again for a wonderful year, readers, even if it it hasn't been total sunshine and roses on this end. Your comments, emails, and support have meant the world to me.

I actually received these Hand-Dipped Strawberries (from Sherries Berries) last year. Let me tell you . . . they are worth every calorie in every bite and every penny. More importantly, it was a great Valentine gift because these are something I would not have bought for myself. So if you want to get a great Valentine gift, surprise someone special with a dramatic display of 1 dozen hand dipped and decorated strawberries. Nestled inside an elegant gold foiled box with plush black lining, each berry boasts of a unique design and flavor combination for a deliciously different experience with every bite. These "almost too beautiful to eat" berries provide a full variety of our original six fancy dipped berries decorated with either; swizzles, almonds, mini-chocolate chips or fresh shredded coconut.

As soon as the temperatures begin to creep anywhere near the 60 degree mark, I'm in sandals. Heck, give me a 45-degree day (and no snow on the ground) and I'm probably in sandals. I love sandals almost as much as I love dresses; the fact that I must confine my tootsies in boots and shoes throughout the winter thoroughly depresses me.
(I originally typed "toesies" and my Firefox spellchecker asked me if I meant tootsies. Why yes, yes I did Firefox! Thank you for keeping me refreshed on my cutesy vocabulary; thanks for making me sound like I'm a little old lady that belongs in New Joisey.)
But back to the sandal thing here. It really does depress me- the Sad Sandal Stupid Snow Syndrome (I shall call it) typically strikes in the middle of January. It's around that time of year I always find myself in my closet waving my arms around while proclaiming, "I WANT THIS SNOW TO GO AWAAAAY. I WANT TO MOOOOOVE. I WANT TO MOVE SOME PLACE WHERE I CAN WEAR SANDALS YEAR ROUND AND IT'S WAAAARM. I AM GOING TO PACK UP PETUNIA AND LEAVE YOU, HUSBAND OF MINE, I'M GETTING AN APARTMENT IN ARIZONA AND YOU CAN COME VISIT ME 'KAYTHANKSBYE."
I typically even haul out a few empty suitcases to emphasize my point, yell-talking and waving my arms around while piling sandals and shorts in the suitcases (with Petunia on top ignoring the whole production while chewing on whatever clothing tag she finds to fit into her mouth). Husband watches on, smirking to himself as I carry on ranting in my madness. He always rolls his eyes and nervously ignores me (or promptly schedules a trip to somewhere warm, like Vegas or...Arizona!) so I kind of get my way. But only kind of- we always return to the wintery city within a week and I'm back to being sad, itching for the warm weather and my sandals.
So! No summer is complete without sandals (and lots of them) and this year I am loving what I shall refer to as "Balmain-Inspired Studded Strappy Sandals". I have no idea if that's what the fashion world is calling these, but that is what I've decided tocall them. Hang on here, and you will see what I mean.
For my expensive category I chose none other than the Balmain beauties themselves. They first made their appearance on the Balmain Spring 2009 Runway. I, however, didn't notice them until I saw this picture of Jennifer Connelly in a Balmain straight-off-the-runway-get-up at a premiere for He's Just Not That Into You. Holy moly. I can leave the dress (the shoulder pads freak me out and isn't this dress from the Spring 2009 RTW collection much prettier?) but those sandals. THOSE SANDALS. If I had $2,000 to drop on something completely self-indulgent and over-the-top and obscene this year, those sandals would be it. I don't (damn you sucky economy!) but lucky for me, "Balmain-Inspired" sandals are popping up everywhere. Hooray.
Both Zara and Bebe did a near exact replication of the Balmain Studded Crystal sandals, which I could have easily featured for my "middle" choice. However, I don't have a Zara anywhere near me and the Bebe ones are completely sold out (and going for almost $300, which is double their selling price, on any auction site). ALDO also does a knock-off, but I find ALDO shoes to be uncomfortable and poorly-fitting on my feet. So I decided to feature these Steve Madden wedges instead. They aren't exactly the same, but the concept is there- the chunky, studded, blingy straps swath your feet in total badassness. And that is what I like so much about this concept- the edginess of the design actually makes your feet look prettier- dainty, even, in comparison to the straps and studs. Wedges are easy to walk in and even easier on the feet, which makes them my sandal of choice for the summer. You get the best of both worlds with the Steve Madden Quikk sandals.
Looking to get the same look but not break the bank? Go Jane is great for this. They have also jumped on the "Balmain Inspired" trend and for $15.70 you can get these awesome little heels. The heel is a very easy-to-walk-in 3-inches (well, easy-t0-walk-in-for-me, I probably shouldn't make this bold statement for others because I am sure my 76-year old gramma would not find them so easy-to-walk-in. Neither would my Husband. I'll shut up now). The only downfall is the lack of cushioning. While they are lightly padded on the bottom, I would recommend getting some foot petals to place near the ball of the feet if you're planning to do any heavy walking in them. I actually have these sandals and love them, and after buying foot petals they're still only around $20. You can't afford not to get them. Srsly.
These flat sandals are also another inspired version (that I also own!). They're comfy and look great with both jeans and dresses. They're also available in black, but I liked the gold version better for these. I wouldn't walk for miles in them (they're not that comfy!) but they are comfortable enough to wear around on lazy summer days and not be limping by the end of it. And again, for under $20- you can't afford not to get them! Isn't it annoying when people say that to you? It's like the ultimate in "I Don't Know What Else To Say To Pitch a Sale For These So I'm Going to Tell You They're Cheap And You're a Complete Idiot Not Smart Person If You Don't Buy Them".
But it's true. They're cheap, and you're a complete idiot not smart person if you don't buy them. So there.
5. And then there is me:
In the Go Jane sandals and the Candies sandals, of course.
Not counting my Tory Burch Breely flip flops (and the J. Crew sandals I always get suckered into buying every year) I simply don't see the point in dropping a pretty penny on sandals. When it comes to sandals and the summertime, I like to completely go for quantity over quality. Er, um, I mean....I like quality (I'm not going to tell you guys to run out and buy something that's going to fall apart after 5 minutes of wearing it) but places like Target, Kohl's, Old Navy, and even Go Jane have great sandals at an even greater price. Go! Run! Buy!
So how about you guys? Love the Balmain-inspired studded trend? Hate the Balmain-inspired studded trend? What sandals are you coveting this summer?

Spring is a time of flowers, not only because gardens and wild patches everywhere are blooming, but also because there are so many flower-friendly holidays. Valentines Day, Easter, and Mothers Day are often considered an occasion to buy a bouquet, but many people dont know the environmental and social impact of the gift they are giving.
The cut flower industry that provides so many beautiful bunches of flowers for consumers is about as natural as a plastics factory. While many companies try to compare the carbon footprint of greenhouse flowers vs. imported ones, other issues are overlooked. The perfection of a store-bought flower is achieved through the use of pesticides - some of which are banned in many countries - and irrigation. Water is diverted from the farms and villages that desperately need it, and used to feed luxury flowers that are unlikely to provide food for pollinating insects, let alone humans.
Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to give and enjoy flowers, while giving Mother Nature a break, too. Buying locally grown, in season flowers is one way to do it. And if you cant grow your own flowers, you can always make them. This weeks Poster Sketch features a collection of handmade flowers that are free of DDT, and will never wilt.

The self-inflicted June Ring a Day challenge is one third complete! Only 20 more rings to go. I believe by then I will be able to make them in my sleep! After 10 days, I have already learned a few new things about making jewelry. The most valuable lesson has been: quality before variety. In other words, its okay to make the same variations over and over, instead of trying to force new ideas that turn out poorly. Im going to stick to what works!
Therefore, todays ring is a very simple herringbone design - one of my favorites. I think more often than not, its the use of color and accents that make a piece special, not the elaborate use of techniques. For this piece, I combined some very pretty blue, white and clear seed beads with a lovely smoky blue shell coin. The result is a breezy ring, perfect for summer, and a much calmer me.
House of 3 is a collaboration website between three big names in scrapbooking - Heidi Swapp, Rhonna Farrer, and Janet Hopkins. Together, they've combined a ton of style with digital goodies like Photoshop brushes, blog backgrounds, and frames that anybody can use (I've been using some of their brushes here over the last couple days, and I love them). It's a toss up, but I think my favorite are printable projects they offer. Here are some of my favorites:
** To celebrate House of 3's first birthday, they are currently offering their Monograms Printable Kit at half price. Originally $19.99, on sale for $9.99, the Monograms Printable Kit includes both PDF files for easy printing as well as PNG files for you to use digitally.

Title: THE BEATLES - ALL MY LOVING ( CLOSE YOUR EYES )
Video Clip created by Alexandros Molfessis , for Rafael
Every week, I search through the zillions of Etsy listings, hunting for 16 amazing pieces of jewelry or beaded art. Using Etsys Poster Sketch tool, I share my finds here on Inspirational Beading. The entire process is a great way to meet other artists and to see new works of bead art.
Recently, I was asked to share the secret behind the Poster Sketch segments. The technique I use to share my Etsy finds can also be used to show completed treasuries on a blog or website. This process is great if youve been featured in a treasury, or have made one that you want to share, and you want to preserve it. Because Etsy treasuries expire, its nice to have a record of the short time in the spotlight. Making a treasury is a lot of work, and the results are often beautiful. Keeping and displaying your favorite treasuries can be a great source of inspiration in the future.
Im going to list each step as clearly as possible, so if youre just getting to know your computer or the internet, hopefully these instructions will be helpful to you. Note: Im working with Windows and Mozilla Firefox, but these steps are pretty universal for PC users.
One: Open your internet browser and find the treasury that you wish to save. Scroll down so that all of the items are centered in the window, and nothing is cut off.
Two: Take a screenshot of the page to capture the treasury. Hold Ctrl on your keyboard, and press Print Screen [Prt Scr].
Three: Open the Paint tool in Accessories. To avoid any unwanted border on your image, you can pre-shrink the page. Scroll down to the bottom right hand corner of the white canvas, and use your cursor to grab and drag the corner of the page up and to the left. Shrink the canvas so that it is smaller than a treasury.
Four: Paste the treasury screenshot onto the page. Hold Ctrl and press V. Save this page if you want - you can always delete it later.
Five: Click on the tool icon that shows a dotted rectangle. Use your mouse to draw a box around the treasury, only capturing what you want to show. Leave a few mm of boarder around the edge, and try to make all of the sides evenly spaced.
Six: From the Edit drop down menu, select Cut, or press Ctrl + X. Open a New blank page in Paint. Do not save the changes to the current file.
Seven: Pre-shrink the canvas, and paste your treasury snippet onto the blank page [Ctrl + V]. Save the new file with a unique name - I usually use Month/Year/Curator. Be sure to save it as a JPEG file, not a BMP.
Now that you have this image of your treasury, you can upload it and share it almost anywhere you want to. A few good places to show off an Etsy treasury are your Facebook page, Flickr pool, and your blog. Most blog platforms allow you to upload and display images from your computer; but with a few extra steps, you can show off your treasury, and improve the look and SEO of your blog at the same time.
One: You will need to upload your treasury snippet to an image hosting site like Photobucket. Be sure to upload it to the correct album or sub-album. If necessary, relocate the file before completing the next steps.
Two: Copy the Direct Link URL for your hosted image.
Three: At the point in your blog text where you want to display your treasury, type the following code:
Replace YourImage with the URL for your picture. Replace ImageTitle with a name for your picture. The alt tag will create a text caption if viewers have HTML turned off, or if the image doesnt load properly. Youve probably seen these before. Instead of a picture, a box with a red X will appear, and if the alt tag is used, the name of the image will also show. The title tag will create the yellow caption that appears when you hover your cursor over an HTML image. Both of these tags can also help your picture and blog show up in search engines, so its a good idea to use relevant keywords in your image title.
You will need to add this code in the HTML editor of your blog platform. If you would like the image to be a clickable link to another destination, you can highlight the code, and use the link tool of your blog editor to add the destination URL. You can also add the code by hand. It will look like this:
If you want to link back to the actual treasury that you are sharing, remember that Etsy treasuries eventually expire. Broken links arent good for SEO (Search Engine Optimization), so its a good idea to remove the link code after the treasury has expired.
The target=_blank code will make the link open in a new window (unless the viewer right clicks or has tabbed browsing set up). This will make sure that readers dont lose track of your blog when checking out your link.
Four: Set the alignment for your image.
To center the picture between paragraphs, enter the HTML on a new line, and add paragraph tags to center it. It will look like this:
You can also make the text of your blog post wrap around the image if it is on the left or right of the page. To do this, add the code to the first line of the paragraph where you would like the image to be. Replace with
for right hand images
or
for left hand images.
To make a handy reference of the HTML code, you can highlight and copy it, and save it to a text file, like Notepad or WordPad.
Now that you can preserve your favorite Etsy treasuries, theres even more incentive to get out and try one. To find out when a new spot will open up, check in with the Treasury Clock on Craftopolis.com. It keeps track of Treasury Main and Treasury West, and provides a countdown to the next opening. Have fun!

I am a casting director in Los Angeles, CA, and i would like actors to be as educated as possible. It just makes MY job easier. Here is a story of inspiration about how the film "The Miss Sunshine" went from the little engine that could, to a box office smash hit.
