Savvy Vintage Shopping by the Pros

por | | 0 comentarios

Ran across this info and thought I would pass it along. Since not everyone knows what they are buying ... if you are buying true Vintage clothes here are some tips to make sure your purchase is worth the $$$$$:

  • Fur: Check that the hairs are firmly attached to the pelts hide and that there is no molting or flaking on the surface;

  • Lingerie - Check for stains (i.e., coffee, lipstick, etc.) that cannot be removed. If the color is off -- you can always die it another color

  • Clothes - Pieces from the sixties or earlier usually contain extra fabric in the sames which allows you let your garments out (YAHOO!)

  • You can change a dress neckline or length to make it look more current.

  • Remember that if there are 3 things that need to be fixed, you are better off finding something similar that requires less work.

  • If buying online rquest photo's of the item's label, inside seam and if a purse the hardware and corners.

If buying new ... it's not hard to find some great deals on the net. Retro is "in" right now. From high end to low ... you can find the styles. Check out Yoox.com (they carry alot of designer clothes and one of a kind jewelry); Alloy (for thinner wallets); Coast (I'm lovin' Coast -- they have fabulous dresses) and Manhattanite, jut to name a few.

Title: Vintage David Letterman (1987) - Brazilian Coffee House 2 of 3

Late Night with David Letterman late 1987. Letterman does his Top Ten list, "What's Hal Wearing" and the Late Night Thrill-Cam. On part 2 he orders out to a Brazilian Coffee House for some flan. Part 3 is very funny, he has a lady on with her two monkeys. One of the monkeys does not care very much for Letterman and keeps trying to attack him. In parts 2 and 3 there's some 1987 commercials, one of them has Joe Piscopo doing a Miller Light Beer commercial. Late Night with David Letterman was a nightly hour-long comedy talk show on NBC hosted by David Letterman. It premiered in 1982 and went off the air in 1993, after Letterman left NBC and moved to the Late Show on CBS. Late Night with Conan O'Brien then filled the time slot. In 1991, the show's three production companies — Carson Productions, Worldwide Pants, and NBC Productions — were awarded a Peabody Award, which cited the following: In the past ten years, one show has moved to the position of the leader in late night television in creativity, humor, and innovation. That program is Late Night With David Letterman. As one member of the Peabody Board remarked, "David Letterman is a born broadcaster." He is also a savvy co-executive producer. Along with co-executive producer Jack Rollins, producer Robert Morton, director Hal Gurnee, and musical director Paul Shaffer, Mr. Letterman has surrounded himself with exceptional talent and given them the go-ahead to experiment with the television medium. Particularly noteworthy is the work of head writer Steve O'Donnell and his talented staff. Together, the "Late Night" team manages to take one of TV's most conventional and least inventive forms — the talk show — and infuse it with freshness and imagination. For television programming which, at its best, is evocative of the greats, from Your Show of Shows, to The Steve Allen Show, and The Ernie Kovacs Show, a Peabody to Late Night With David Letterman. The program ran four nights a week, Monday to Thursday, from the show's premiere in February 1982 until May 1987 from 12:30 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. Friday shows were added in June 1987 (NBC previously, aired Friday Night Videos in the 12:30 a.m. slot with occasional Late Night specials and reruns). Starting in September 1991, The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson was pushed back from 11:30 p.m. to 11:35 p.m., with Letterman starting at 12:35 a.m., at the request of NBC affiliates who wanted more advertising time for their profitable late newscasts (though Letterman had a different reason for the delay: "With the extra five minutes, I will make certain that my make-up is absolutely perfect!").

Happy Anniversary (& A Giveaway!)

Holy shmoly cow. It's been a year, readers. A whole year! And close to 500 posts and nearly 600 followers on Blogger (plus how ever many more of you follow me by other means, I know you're out there!). What can I say? I'm impressed. What started as a little warbling venture about some photos of a dog that didn't belong to me has now turned into this.

Way to go, me. I AM AWESOME.

Oh! And you are all awesome, too. And to say thanks to all of you, I'm doing another giveaway. There will be just one winner this time (sorry guys) and a pretty simple prize because frankly, I'm a bit too zonked at the moment to do better. And hey now, let's get something straight here- YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO BE FOLLOWING MY BLOG 'CUZ YOU LIKE ME. NOT 'CUZ I GIVE YOU THINGS.

OH! OHHH!!!! AND it's my birthday in almost a week (on the 12th readers, ahem) (yes, the original Columbus Day) (and man, that caused total confusion for me as a child because I'd be all, "Okay now who exactly is this Christopher Columbo person I share my birthday with?" and my mom would be all, "I ALREADY TOLD YOU, YOU DON'T SHARE YOUR BIRTHDAY WITH HIM." and then I'd be all, "Oh that's good because I already hafta share every other single birthday with SOMEONE and people keep taking the easy way out and giving us crappy board games to share as gifts because OH-HA-HA-HA isn't that funny, twins can play board games together and I DON'T WANT TO SHARE MY STUPID BOARD GAME WITH A THIRD PERSON." and my mom would raise her eyebrow at me and then I'd think to myself, "But huh, I thought we only have holidays if someone has a birthday, like Christmas. Christmas is baby Jesus's birthday and Easter is the Easter Bunny's birthday so how did this dude get a holiday if it isn't his birthday?") but uh anyway, here I am, giving things to you a week before my birthday. Something is a bit screwy with this picture, huh.

Perhaps more than you will ever know, my dears.

But it's fun to give you guys things because you give me things in return. Like your love. And pictures of your pet chihuahuas dressed up in their Halloween costumes (Ha! Thanks again, Rosa!). Blogging might be the most time-sucking, non-money-making job ever...but I rather dig it. Perhaps I will even stick around for another year.

So! Drum roll please. Up for grabs is this Simply Vera by Vera Wang necklace 'cuz it's edgy but pretty:

AND this Cupcake Sampler from Cupcakeinjars off of Etsy:

Happy Anniversary (& A Giveaway!)

Because what's a birthday or anniversary without a (cup)cake or two? Exactly. You get your choice of flavors- the complete list of all 21 flavors to choose from is on the Etsy website. And yes, you read that right- with cupcake names like "OMG- Oh My Ganache!" and "Yum Blonde In a Pink Skirt", you can't go wrong. They're all insanely good.

Entering the giveaway is easy- simply post a comment with your name and email address. That's it! There can be only one entry per commenter (multiple comments will be deleted!) and the giveaway will end promptly Friday evening at 9pm MT. The winner will be notified by email for their mailing address and so they can choose their cupcake flavors.

Easy peasy, that's it!

Thanks again for a wonderful year, readers, even if it it hasn't been total sunshine and roses on this end. Your comments, emails, and support have meant the world to me.

It is a happy anniversary, indeed. ?

Touching base...

por | | 0 comentarios

So... it's been a crazy past seven days. Busy, busy, busy! Lots of laughter and a couple hissy fits from the kids (...okay, fine, they were from me - I'm not a morning person), but I had an all-around fun time with my niece and nephew. I'll be home later on today, but I've gone ahead and reopened the shop right now. As for my Week 13 post, give me a couple days?

And thanks for playing along last week with the color palettes - I'll be responding to comments later on tonight and tomorrow. :)

Quick Inspiration: Earth Hour 2009

por | | 0 comentarios

Earth Hour 2009On March 28th, millions of people all over the world will be turning out their lights to raise awareness about climate change.

Earth Hour was started in Sydney Australia, and after just one year the number of participants went from 2 million to over 50 million. This year the numbers are even greater.

When it comes to raising topics about the environment, there are so many ways to get people talking about the issues. Beading is one of them!

If you’re an eco-friendly beader, why not make something for the Earth this month? You could use green, blue and white beads to represent the globe, buy some tagua nut beads for a sustainable project, or plant some flowers for the bees and then recreate them with beads.

And don’t forget to turn out your bead lamp for Earth Hour!

Chimera Necklace

The Last Chimera by D. Hellandbrand
The Last Chimera

When Zeus banished the Titans to Tartarus in the Greek myth, the giants took their revenge by sending forth their monstrous children to terrorize the realm of the new gods. Gaia gave birth to the serpent Typhon, and though he would also be defeated by Zeus, he was able to wreak much havoc on the world, and sired three more terrible creatues: Cerberus, Hydra and Chimera.

These three-headed beasts are well known in Greek legends, and are still favorite monsters in many fantasy stories. The least well known is the Chimera, though it is arguably the most interesting of Typhon‘s children. With the heads of a dragon, a lion, and a goat, this monster is often depicted as female. In some versions of the legend, the Chimera was the mother of the Sphinx.

In modern art and stories, the anatomy of the Chimera has taken on many different forms. A Chimeric Creature is a blending of three monsters and animals, sometimes with multiple heads, and often bearing the wings and tail of a dragon.

The Inspiration:

Before I took up bead weaving, I collected vintage acrylic and lucite beads, and used them to create tapestries of bead strands to decorate my home. After many moves and encounters with kids, some of them are a bit disheveled. One that has survived completely intact is made entirely with red and black beads. It’s one of my favorites.

Like any decoration that hangs around for a long time, I had started to take my bead tapestries for granted. The red and black strands caught my attention one day, and I wanted to refresh my interest by making a piece of jewelry with the same elements. When I thought of the red and black together, I thought it would be fun to create a tribute to the mythical Chimera, using the traditional three headed version as inspiration.

Chimera Bead Palette

The Beads:

I started with three shades of 11/0 seed beads - light amber for the lion, Siam ruby for the dragon, and opaque black for the goat. For accents, I combined two mixtures of Fire Designs Furnace Glass beads - Queen of Hearts and Strawberry Shortcake. I selected my favorites in red, black and brown from this new mixture. I had a hard time choosing, and took a long while to create a balance between the single colored beads, and those with striped accents. I also added mixed strands of Czech fire polish beads in amber, jet and garnet, and a homemade mixture of hex cuts and Toho™ triangles in my Chimeric color palette.

Chimera Necklace Pendant Detail

The Beadwork:

I have always been a huge admirer of Margie Deeb’s Rainforest Cascade necklace, with it’s luscious strands of beads. I think most bead lovers can relate to the intense craving that thick strands of beads can induce. Although I love to look at them, I’m usually reluctant to use bare seed bead strands in my designs. My seed beads call out to be woven! So I sketched out a design that would have the same cascading feel that I liked, but used the tiny beads in a more structured way.

Chimera Beadwork Necklace - The Sage's Cupboard

To create a pendant, I used black hex cuts to make a tapered base, then added 17 strands of wide fringe. Each of the 17 strands ends with a cane glass bead, and has long fronds of seed beads ending with hex cuts or fire polish beads. To add some depth to the fringe, I mixed my original three seed bead colors with color-lined seed beads in dark amber brown, mauve and jet black. The lion colored fringe is at the center, so that the outer colors match up with the tubular peyote rope. I love the way the wide fringe has elements of both beadweaving and multi-strand, and the furnace glass adds just the right amount of texture. I almost don’t want to let this piece go!

I would like to thank Artbeads.com for providing the Fire Designs beads used in this piece. Inspirational Beading has not received paid compensation for including Artbeads.com products or reviews in this blog post. I have shared my honest opinions about the products used in this design.

Helping the Gulf Coast and Ring Twenty-two

Help the Gulf Coast Donates $2000 to NWF

Last week, Help the Gulf Coast announced that they have received approval from the National Wildlife Federation to raise funds on their behalf. Just yesterday, they made their first donation, and matched the $2000 already raised for Oxfam America. Not bad for less than two weeks of fundraising!

The collective is still going strong, with over 400 amazing handmade donations still available, and counting. Every dollar raised will go towards efforts to halt and repair the damage done by the enormous oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico.

Once I had sent in Ring # 17 as my donation, I couldn’t wait to get started on another piece for the cause. After hearing the great news about NWF, I thought I would celebrate with one more starfish ring. The first ring, Baby Fish Blues, had a cheerful color palette, with not-so-cheerful inspiration. This time, I thought I would use some more somber colors, to reflect how we all feel about this disaster.

Heartbreaker Starfish Ring by The Sage's Cupboard
Ring # 22 - Heartbreaker

I started with the starfish, and used a jet black druk with transparent smoky gray seed beads. I knew that I wanted to use a black and red palette, so all that was left was to choose the band color. When I mentally went over my red bead stash, I thought the best choice would be lustered cranberry. Imagine my delight when I opened the bead box and found a little packet of black-lined garnet 3-cuts tucked away in the corner. It was as if fate had kept me from using them up all this time. The garnet contrasts with the starfish perfectly!

You can learn more about the Help the Gulf Coast collective, and their fundraising efforts, by visiting the Help the Gulf Coast blog, or following them on Twitter. If you still haven’t shopped or donated your own handmade treasure to the cause, here are a few sites to get you motivated:

Title: Help the Gulf Coast Oil Spill Cleanup

The wildlife affected by the Gulf Coast oil spill disaster are in dire need. An estimated 47 million gallons of oil has spewed into the Gulf of Mexico from a British Petroleum oil well damaged during a platform explosion on April 20. The oil has spread across the ocean and onto shorelines along the U.S. where it's wreaking havoc with marine and wildlife populations. Pelicans struggle to free themselves from oil that's thick as tar. Dead birds, sea turtles and dolphins wash ashore. The number of dead and injured birds and marine wildlife continues to climb. The oil spill will have both short- and long-term consequences. Families, fisherman, communities, and the fragile ecosystem need as much help as possible. Through a partnership with HopeVote and Amazon, you can help provide relief from this environmental disaster, and it won't cost you a cent. Now through July 31, 2010, your purchases at Amazon made through the HopeVote website will benefit the National Wildlife Federation and the Gulf Coast Oil Spill Fund. For every purchase made, 1.5 to 3 percent of your total will be donated to help people and wildlife affected by the Gulf oil spill. To participate in HopeVote, shoppers simply navigate to www.hopevote.com, where a special link takes them to the familiar Amazon storefront. Any purchases they make after following this link will count towards the fundraiser benefiting the Gulf Coast. The disaster continues to escalate, but by shopping at HopeVote, you can help the restoration and rehabilitation efforts put forth by these two organizations. Gulf Coast Oil Spill Cleanup The National Wildlife Federation (NWF) has organized and deployed a volunteer network to monitor the Gulf Coast for the wildlife impacted by the oil spill. NWF is also leading the effort to restore delicate breeding and nesting grounds along the coast, in addition to educating the public about the oil spill's repercussions. The Gulf Coast Oil Spill Fund is fighting the short-term effects by giving emergency grants to non-profit organizations dedicated to helping victims of the Gulf oil spill. The fund will also fight the long-term effects by addressing environmental, economic, cultural issues of the disaster, and strengthening communities across the coast against future disasters by investing in solutions. Clayton Somera, HopeVote co-founder. "We want people to know that with the vast amounts of Amazon shoppers a big difference can be made, with the HopeVote fundraiser, in the Gulf Coast Oil Spill cleanup. The best part of the deal is making a difference in the lives and livelihood of this devastated community, basically, at no cost! The appreciation and gratitude from the recipients of the raised funds is immense." About HopeVote HopeVote gives Amazon shoppers a way to make a difference.
