Sometimes the beads themselves are all the inspiration one needs, and nothing beats a great seed bead mix. Whether purchased or created, the chaotic look of mixed beads has definate appeal. They can be paired with a single contrasting or complimenting color for a bold statement, but these beads need to stand alone.
The Beads:
This bead mixture is made from multi-colored transparent iris seed beads, from Canadian Importer JohnBead. White and beige stand out among reds, blues and yellows, with a dash of purple, brown and green for good measure.
The Beadwork:
Presenting "Confetti Rope". A simple peyote stitch tube becomes a bright, cheerful necklace with these multi-colored seed beads. The necklace measures 22 inches (56 cm), and features a lucite bead clasp. With 12 beads in the base row, the peyote tube has an outside circumference of 1-1/4 inches. It can also be wrapped three times and worn as a wrist bangle.
Your Turn:
Use or create your own bead mixture and let it stand out in a unique piece of beadwork. Share your pictures and ideas on the Beading Challenges Forum.

You know that feeling when you've got a nice chunk of time set aside to create, but nothing's working? That was me all day Sunday and Monday - talk about frustrating. I had plans, and a schedule, then Murphy came along with his Law and decided, nope, not going to happen today.
I finally got it together late Monday night. Since I'm right in the middle of those projects, I thought I'd take the opportunity to share what's on my work desk (and play in Photoshop). Most are works in progress; I'll leave you guessing what they may actually be for now.
Anybody have anything new to share?

Spring is a time of flowers, not only because gardens and wild patches everywhere are blooming, but also because there are so many flower-friendly holidays. Valentines Day, Easter, and Mothers Day are often considered an occasion to buy a bouquet, but many people dont know the environmental and social impact of the gift they are giving.
The cut flower industry that provides so many beautiful bunches of flowers for consumers is about as natural as a plastics factory. While many companies try to compare the carbon footprint of greenhouse flowers vs. imported ones, other issues are overlooked. The perfection of a store-bought flower is achieved through the use of pesticides - some of which are banned in many countries - and irrigation. Water is diverted from the farms and villages that desperately need it, and used to feed luxury flowers that are unlikely to provide food for pollinating insects, let alone humans.
Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to give and enjoy flowers, while giving Mother Nature a break, too. Buying locally grown, in season flowers is one way to do it. And if you cant grow your own flowers, you can always make them. This weeks Poster Sketch features a collection of handmade flowers that are free of DDT, and will never wilt.

Title: AADBSK Season 3 - 3rd Asia Tour MIROTIC Poster Photo Sketch
When I sat down to do my taxes this past spring, it occurred to me that my bookkeeping systems needs a lot of work. One of the things that needs the most improvement is my materials inventory, which is inaccurate at best. I know that if I want to fix things, Im going to need to start by taking stock of my entire bead stash from top to bottom. The concept is horrifying!
Before I can even fathom such a task, I will need to clear out a lot of older beads, particularly those that Ive had since long before beading became more of a business than a hobby. My ultimate goal is to have only items in my stash that also have invoices to go with them. This could take awhile.
I have a lot of good reasons for never using all these beads that Ive been carrying around. Some of them only have tiny quantities; there arent enough to commit to a project, so they wait until they can be used as the occasional accent color.
Others just keep getting passed over, and I tell myself Ill probably need them some day. This is, of course, ridiculous. I dont worry about saving beads that I really, really like, because I love using them. And if Im ever in need of a certain bead color, I have no trouble ordering them. There is no reason to hang on to these beads until the end of time.
The Inspiration:
I am starting my big destash project by using up all of my old Czech seed beads. The first thing I did was pull out all of my bead boxes and removed everything that I havent used in months. I sorted the seeds by color, then created an assortment of bead soups. They instantly became ten times more appealing.
The Beads:
The first bead mixture that I wanted to use was a combination of all my pinks and purples. I liked the sweetness of the colors, and I wanted to put it to good use. I grabbed some more must-go beads - a 4/o mixture of magenta and baby blue. With the dash of blue thrown in, the bead soup was now the color of cotton candy.
The Beadwork:
The most exciting thing about a bead soup that absolutely must be used up is that there are no rules or boundaries. You can make any design, any size! Its been awhile since I made a clasp free chain necklace, so I decided to make loops of right angle weave until I ran out of beads.
I created a pattern of accent beads in groups of four: magenta, pink, blue, pink. To make it a little more interesting, I alternated which side of the chain the accent beads were on, but in groups of three. At first glance, there doesnt appear to be a pattern at all, but there is a lack of chaos that sort of soothes the eye.
I wish I had staggered the pattern a little more, because I ran out of pale pink accents long before everything else. Still, the necklace turned out to be a whopping 70 inches. I think this is the longest necklace Ive ever made. Im going to enjoy this destash mission.

Now that fall is in full swing, shops everywhere are filling up with all kinds of pumpkin goodness for us to indulge in. There are fresh pumpkins ready for carving, canned pumpkin for baking, and for some reason, pre-painted miniature pumpkins that are just meant to look good. The arrival of the big orange fruit is a sure sign that holiday goodness is just around the corner.
The Inspiration:
Fall is by far my favorite time of year. Most of the time, the weather is just right - not to hot and not too cold. And of course, all of the best holidays are strung together at the end of the year, making the coming winter seem much less dreadful. There's nothing more comforting than the idea of a nice warm beverage on cool autumn evening, with a friendly jack-o-lantern lighting up the window. To celebrate the arrival of fall, I thought it would be fun to create something with vibrant and interesting autumn colors.
The Beads:
I started with some bright orange 11/o seed beads. On their own they seem sort of garish, but when I paired them up with some orange sunset 15/0's, I saw some spunky personality that wasn't there before. These two colors would be perfect for a fun fall necklace.
The Beadwork:
Using the orange seed beads, I created an assortment of peyote stitch rings using different counts and patterns. Each one is slightly different from the others. After the rings were completed, I searched for the perfect color to pair them with. I wanted something that would make a nice contrast for the orange, but that wouldn't compete with the bright colors. Finally I selected the purplish metallic rainbow mix, and strung all the rings together to complete the piece. It's a bit odd, but still prettier than a jack-o-lantern.
