Poster Sketch: Round and Pointy Shapes

por | | 0 comentarios

The dice have been thrown, and the lucky winner of my color lined cubes giveaway is Julie, who shared an inspiring story of teaching kids to bead and discover new ideas with shape and color. Thank you so much to all of my readers, and everyone who shared their favorite bead shapes in the contest!

Julie’s favorite seed beads shapes are 11/o rounds and bugle beads. To celebrate finding another home for some of my favorite beads, I have a fun collection of items with round and pointy shapes - just like seed beads and bugles!

Inspired Beaders: Nancy and John Chlpka

Beaded Gourd Bowl by Wet Dog Studios

Beads and nature always go together. The world’s first beads were inspired by nature, and by early humanity’s need to make use of everything at hand. Leftover shells, animal feathers, quills, bones and interesting stones were all used to make primitive and wonderful beads. Today, not all beads are natural, but even man-made ones can be used to channel our affection for Mother Earth.

One style of bead art that captures nature’s charm is the beaded gourd. Made from dried and hollowed vegetables, these charming works of art can remind us of how beautiful nature is. We often keep the natural world at arm’s reach, but artists like Nancy and John Chlpka give us the opportunity to embrace it again. The beautiful gourd bowls, birdhouses and jewelry from their shop, Wet Dog Studios, can inspire the Earth-lover in us all.

Inspirational Beading: How did you become interested in working with gourds?

Nancy: John gave me one as a gift. I got to wondering "Could I?" and for the last ten years the answer has been YES! Initially John hung around for the heavy lifting but about three years ago the gourd bug bit him, too. He has primarily stuck to pyrography and carving, but just last month added selections to my bead order!

Inspirational Beading: What kinds of beads do you usually use to embellish your work?

Nancy: On a gourd, bone beads are my absolute favorite. I'll often color them with a natural dye such as coffee or beets. Also, combining them with glass or shell beads can really make a design pop.

Inspirational Beading: Do you have a favorite color or finish to use?

Nancy: I've used every color in one project or another but usually find myself in the brown family. My designs use mostly a matte bead accented by intricately carved or flashy glass beads.

Inspirational Beading: If you could master any new technique, what would it be?

Nancy: I've finished a lot of gourds with rims of woven natural materials, and I'm experimenting with stringing beads to give gourd bowls a "necklace" finish.

Inspirational Beading: Who do you hope to inspire with your work?

Nancy: Anyone with an interest. I think people become so busy they ignore their own creativity. John and I spend hours at Art Festivals answering questions for up and coming artists - it's wonderful!

Nancy and John Chlpka live in rural Western Pennsylvania with their two dogs. The dogs play an important role in the business. Spike is Director of Human Resources, and Vegas is Director of Special Events. Both helped coin the motto for the business: "There's Nothing Friendlier Than A Wet Dog!" All are big supporters of the Animal Rescue group.

Nancy and John are frequent speakers at Art Guilds and Garden Clubs in their area, spreading the word about gourds. Both have won awards for their artwork and in addition to their Etsy site they are featured at The Blue Heron Art Gallery in Volant, Pennsylvania. Nancy and John are members of both the American and Kentucky Gourd Societies. They source their art-quality gourds from nearby suppliers, such as Front Porch Crafts of Kentucky.

Pumpkin Necklace

Jack-O-Lantern Lit at Halloween

Now that fall is in full swing, shops everywhere are filling up with all kinds of pumpkin goodness for us to indulge in. There are fresh pumpkins ready for carving, canned pumpkin for baking, and for some reason, pre-painted miniature pumpkins that are just meant to look good. The arrival of the big orange fruit is a sure sign that holiday goodness is just around the corner.

The Inspiration:

Fall is by far my favorite time of year. Most of the time, the weather is just right - not to hot and not too cold. And of course, all of the best holidays are strung together at the end of the year, making the coming winter seem much less dreadful. There's nothing more comforting than the idea of a nice warm beverage on cool autumn evening, with a friendly jack-o-lantern lighting up the window. To celebrate the arrival of fall, I thought it would be fun to create something with vibrant and interesting autumn colors.

The Beads:

I started with some bright orange 11/o seed beads. On their own they seem sort of garish, but when I paired them up with some orange sunset 15/0's, I saw some spunky personality that wasn't there before. These two colors would be perfect for a fun fall necklace.

Orange Seed Beads

The Beadwork:

Using the orange seed beads, I created an assortment of peyote stitch rings using different counts and patterns. Each one is slightly different from the others. After the rings were completed, I searched for the perfect color to pair them with. I wanted something that would make a nice contrast for the orange, but that wouldn't compete with the bright colors. Finally I selected the purplish metallic rainbow mix, and strung all the rings together to complete the piece. It's a bit odd, but still prettier than a jack-o-lantern.

& Questions Answered Regarding My Latest Purchases:

por | | 0 comentarios

1. Both items from Forever 21 are smalls.
I've found that Forever 21 has lately joined the ranks in vanity sizing- a few years back, a small would be laughable (and I'd rip a few seams trying to wiggle into whatever I had purchased) but now a small is almost too big. I really wish they'd introduce an XS in more of their clothing items.

To give you guys an idea- I'm 5'2", typically a size 0-2 in Nanette Lepore and a size 0-2 in J Crew. I don't have any boobs. I'm both an apple shape (I carry my weight around my middle) and I have a big rib cage, which is fun. It was amusing when I got measured for my wedding dress- most women are big, small, big (hips, waist, chest). I was small, big, small. It's like I'm fucking built backwards. Awesome.

And you know, I have to love the vanity sizing; it totally negates that I've gained about 10 pounds over the past year. YAY VANITY SIZING.

Which reminds me. A co-worker and I were discussing shapes one night and I pointed out my appleness to her. She said, "Well, but you're little. You're like a mini apple. You're a...um...uh...it's like...you're...you're a crab apple!"

Thanks co-worker. A crab apple. *bares fangs*

2. Here is the pattern on the F21 coat:

& Questions Answered Regarding My Latest Purchases:

There is a slight floral pattern to it, which I love. It gives the coat texture without being obnoxious.

3. Yes, those jeans are totally from Target. I actually snagged them a while back when they were on sale for $19.99 (!), but even at $27.99 they're a steal. I'm guessing the inseam is around 33". I washed them as soon as I got home (and even after washing, they retain that nice faded grayish blue color) and they shrunk up to where I can wear them perfectly with a pair of 3" heels. My inseam is typically around 29". They make my pancake-flat butt look...well, good. Or at least better than it normally looks. Awwwwesome.

4. Pictures of me and Petunia:

& Questions Answered Regarding My Latest Purchases: & Questions Answered Regarding My Latest Purchases: & Questions Answered Regarding My Latest Purchases:

Oh wait, that's right. Nobody asked for pictures of Petunia. Well, SOMETHING is wrong with that. Wrong! Wrong wrong wrong! And you guys are getting them anyway. Peets is usually frolicking in the background (or foreground, or any ground) of my photo shoots, so I decided to grab her and snap a few pics. She is totally my baby. And almost a year old! I love chihuahua squints, even if it's probably burning holes into her retina. Enjoy!
