Hair Here, Hair There, Hair Everywhere.

So undoubtedly quite a few of you are going to find nothing of importance in this post. That is fine, that is fine. But I was quite humbled (and surprised!) at how many people reached out to me when I first posted about my illness-related hairloss. It's a real problem that a lot of women have to deal with, but so few want to actually admit to having to deal with.

And understandably so- it's the guys that are supposed to lose the hair, not the ladies. Thick, glossy hair is an indicator of all things great and all things good and all things pretty- thick, glossy hair means you're healthy, you're virile, and that you're ripe for some caveman dude to bop you over the head and drag you off to his cave. Thin, falling out hair and bald spots...well, it means you're sick. It means you're not healthy, you're certainly not virile, and you're a lonely little cave girl hanging out with her leeettle brown chihuahua 24/7 because chihuahuas don't notice such things as hairloss. They only notice the food. And they only notice you giving the food to them so they can put it into their little round, squishy bellies.

I have one sitting on me right now waiting for me to accidentally drop the chocolate chip cookie I'm eating into her mouth. She is so transparent.

For me, the hardest part about dealing with Lupus-related hairloss is that it is always there. There are some days where I feel fine, others where I don't feel fine. But it's hard to peek into the mirror and see bald spots all over your head on those days that you are feeling fine. It's a glaring reminder that you're sick, sick, sick. Even on those days where you feel pretty darn good- the bald spots remain, and it's screaming out to the world, "HI I AM SICK WITH A DISEASE I WILL HAVE FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE. LET'S FUCKING PARTY. YAY." I wrestle daily with the vanity of it all- some days I think, "Oh well, just hair." Others I think, "Ack. My hair my hair my hair!" It's a daily battle, but I'm happy to report that I think things are finally getting better.

I started the full Nioxin regimen about eight weeks ago. I went to the handy dandy Nioxin website, filled out a very comprehensive three question quiz, gave them my Astrological sign, and promised them my firstborn. The website then told me to use the Nioxin System in Level 4, so I immediately ran out and bought it. The Nioxin Level 4 System is for noticeably thinning, chemically treated hair. I bought all three products: the cleanser, the scalp therapy, and the scalp treatment. I also bought the Recharging Complex, which are daily vitamins. Go big or go home, I decided. If I'm going to do this, I'M GONNA DO THIS.

Let me be honest- Nioxin is not awesome shampoo or conditioner. I had been a stickler for Pureology for years now, using the Pureology Pure Volume shampoos and conditioners since 2006. I love Purelogy's products because they smell like heaven. You know, if heaven had a smell. Wait! They smell like Petunia after she's been rolling in a flower garden made out of Sweet Tarts and cotton candy and roses. And maybe a little bit of hippy- but clean hippy, not dirty hippy. That's exactly what Pureology smells like.

So it's been a big change to use the Nioxin, which has a funny burnt-plasticky smell to it. Thankfully the smell doesn't linger, so that's a plus. Nioxin is also really hard on my hair, which I had expected (after reading reviews on MUA). I now deep condition my hair (using this Phyto mask) faithfully once a week and I've also increased my usage of hair serums. If I didn't, I'd look like a walking frizzy furball-that-Streak-hacked-up-in-the-hallway. Yuck. There is nothing fun about Nioxin- not the smell, or the lather, or even its packaging.

BUT. But but but. I was blowdrying my hair the other day when I noticed something:

Hair Here, Hair There, Hair Everywhere.

No, not that I have a forehead so big I could give Tyra Banks a serious run for her money. Or that I really should never photograph myself sans make-up (it won't happen again, promise). That's not it, guys. Look closer. I know it's not the best picture (why do I look blonde?) but look closer.

I HAVE HAIR GROWING! HAIR! BABY HAIRS! Squint. Okay, squint harder. I thought it'd be a relatively easy task, photographing the teeny tiny stubs of baby hairs (all of about 1/4" in size) popping up along my hairline. It isn't easy. The camera kept wanting to focus on my freakishly large forehead and not the hair. But squint and you can see- I haz the hair.

I ran up to Husband excitedly to show him, whiiiich only elicited a bitter response from him ("Oh look, you can grow hair. How special of you."). I chalked up to the fact that he's losing his hair due to good ol' Male Patterned Baldness and is just jealous and I should probably lock up my Nioxin so he doesn't try to dump it out and sabotage me. Or you know- steal it and use it himself. I AM GROWING HAIR, BITCHES! HAAAAIR!!! BABY HAIRS! HAIR HAIR HAIR!

I've been noticing a lot less hair falling out in the shower, too. No more clumps sliding down my legs in the shower and my co-workers no longer have to lint roll me before my shift at work every day. For the first time in almost two years- I can say that I feel like I'm not going bald faster than McCain lost the last election. Or faster than Lindsey Lohan runs to Twitter when she has a break-up. Or...I'll stop now. Woohoo. Goooo hair.

Is it the Nioxin? Who knows. That's the problem here. Hair loss is tricky, especially illness-related hairloss. No one really knows what causes it (stress? being sick?) and no one really knows what stops it (eating chocolate chip cookies? playing with cute puppies?). Has my body decided that I'm now healthy enough to grow hair? Or is the Nioxin working its magic and bitchslapping my hair back into growing? Hard to say. I'm not exactly scientific in my studies here.

However, I would like to note that the Nioxin is the only thing that I have changed in my routine- I haven't started any other new medications in the past year. I'm still on the same old Plaquenil for TEH LUPUS and anti-depressants for TEH FIBROMYALGIA (and okay anxiety and the fact that I tend to make myself hyperventilate when I'm feeling anxious yay). Nothing else new has been happening here except the Nioxin that I started nearly two months ago.

But as long as this keeps happening, I will keep it up with the Nioxin. I have tiny little hairs, about 1/4 inch in size, sprouting all along my hairline- it's the first time I have seen that in a few years. I still have mostly-full bottles of Pureology sitting on my bathroom shelf that I huff daily in order to get my Pureology fix. Oh Pureology, I miss you so. But this is just how it'll have to be. I hope you understand. It's not me, Pureology- it's you.

(Well, actually it is me and my boneheaded body that really wants me to be bald. Pureology I miiiiiiiiiiiss yoooooou. Cry.)

Now for the rest of you-

Hair Here, Hair There, Hair Everywhere.

Something in this picture doesn't belong. Can you spot it? Hee.

I've been having a tough time lately decorating my house. I seem to jump all over the place, picking up hodge podge pieces that look great on the store shelf but seem mismatched in our house. I decided to take a style quiz to help narrow down what exactly it is that I'm looking for. Turns out, I'm "Modern Antique". Huh, how about that!

You can take the quiz here and find your style!

Wednesday Wants Part 2

por | | 0 comentarios

It feels so odd looking at fashions for next fall when we are still in the throes of winter; in fact, our snowiest month here in Colorado (which is March) hasn't even hit yet. Stores and boutiques are stocking flouncy skirts, ruffled tanks, and brightly patterned bikinis; yet the fashion world is currently celebrating and showcasing the dark, layered, heavy trends for next fall.

And I feel like I have a raging hangover from trying to take it all in at once.

Jesus christ, what season is it?!!! If you see me wandering around sometime in the next few weeks in this getup with a bikini top layered over it, Wayfarers perched precariously on my face, and gladiator sandals instead of boots....well, you will know exactly what happened:

Wednesday Wants Part 2
I'm inventing a new season yay! Fallring? Faringtime? Rachel Zoe if you read this call me!
Grieve for me, girls. I'm srsly confused. My brain has sucked it all in and barfed it back out in a mishmash of pretty peaches and preposterous plaids. I click on the links posted at nymag.com to see the runway shows and the brief sting of panic washes over me until I realize, oh yeah- these are fall runway shows. Not spring. No need to fear, Chloe; no need to be startled. Black isn't going to be the big trend this summer. These are fall runway shows. Faaaall.

And I perhaps feel a bit sorry for those in the fashion industry. Is there ever a moment to genuinely enjoy what they've done?

Probably not. But I don't feel that sorry for them, because they obviously get to wear awesome clothes (of their own awesome design) all the time. Which would be awesomely awesome. I'd love to wear awesome clothes of my own awesome design, but I lack those certain design skills needed to be anyone awesome in the Fashion Biz.

So! If I had to design and make my own clothes, I'd probably be running around wrapped in duct tape and toilet paper, adorned in Tulip puff paints with rhinestones stuck on with a glue gun. And it might be bananas, but probably in a way I wasn't exactly going for.

Good thing I have Nanette Lepore to make awesome clothes instead. She was up today:

Wednesday Wants Part 2 Wednesday Wants Part 2 Wednesday Wants Part 2
Wednesday Wants Part 2 Wednesday Wants Part 2 Wednesday Wants Part 2
Wednesday Wants Part 2 Wednesday Wants Part 2 Wednesday Wants Part 2

Ms. Lepore can do no wrong in my eyes. I love her more than someone should be allowed to love a fashion designer they're obsessively stalking. I just want to put her in my pocket, okay? There's nothing wrong with wanting to put itsy bitsy fashion designers into your pocket. Or wanting to kidnap her and hold her against her will in your closet so she can only design clothes for YOU. Or wanting to also get a little bit of the hotness that is Marc Jacobs in on the action.

Beavis and Butthead laughing starts...now. Uhhh heh heh.

What's been your favorite from NY Fashion Week so far? The worst?

I am still dying, part II

por | | 0 comentarios

It seems like I have now moved to phase II of the flu: the bad coughing. It's a harsh, dry cough, and I can't stop COUGHING! And I still feel like shit. And now my abdominal muscles are screaming because I've been coughing for 24 hours straight. Oh lord, this sucks.

I took a bunch of Nyquil earlier this evening, and it did to me what every other alcoholic beverage does to me- I zonked out for about an hour. Then I woke back up, wide awake but still half drunk. And have no fear, my darlings- I didn't OD on the Nyquil. I am so pathetic in my non-drinking ways that 2 tablespoons of Nyquil makes me buzz. Yeeeah.

So here I am. It's 2:35 AM, and I decided to come sit in front of the computer for a bit so I wouldn't wake up Husband with my coughing. And poor Husband- he took very good care of me this weekend. He was like a nurse, wielding boxes of tissues and water and chicken noodle soup. Oh, and also the surprise of Season One of Mad Men on DVD, so I can watch it while I'm feeling feeble.

He's the best. He usually ignores me when I'm sick. He's a typical guy: guys like to "fix" things, and there is no fixing a Lupus flare. There's nothing he can do for me when I'm sick from something Lupus-related except to pat my head and just let me sleep. So I think he's kind of excited that he actually knows what to do for a cold. Or maybe he knows that I'm highly contagious and that I will likely be taking care of him a few days from now. Hmm, maybe.

I just have a few things to post. I will start with the most important: it appears that Revolve Clothing just added a bunch of new markdowns to their sale section. Hooray! Use code "NOTCOTLOVESREVOLVE" for an additional 25% off.

And since I can never resist a sale, I grabbed a few things. I wonder if this is similar to drunk shopping. I am shopping while hopped up on too much cold medication, and it's kind of sad, but oh well whatever. That "SUBMIT" button is just so much easier to press when you are too tired/too overly-medicated to think about it. First are the L.A.M.B. Mitaka's in Gray:

I am still dying, part II

They ended up being $120 and some change after discounts, down from $330.o0. Oh hells to the yes. I had originally wanted these babies, the L.A.M.B. Fen Button Pumps in Red, but my size was gone. Bummer:

I am still dying, part II

So pretty. I'm sad I couldn't get them. I just love platform pumps. I have finicky feet that typically hate high heels (even though I love them so!) but platforms really help, so there isn't so much strain between the heel and the ball of the foot. They make the higher heels wearable for me, and being that I'm only 5'2"- I need all the extra height I can get.

So I then grabbed these Rachel Pumps (in Magenta/Black) from Miss Sixty:

I am still dying, part II

And they ended up being around $49.00 after discounts, down from $129.

And last but not least- I received the Testament top from Revolve on Thursday and quickly snapped a pic that day. It's a darling little top- and I can't believe I snagged it for only $32:

I am still dying, part II
Back I go to bed, so I can cough all over husband some more. Wee!

Loving :: Kristopher K Design

por | | 0 comentarios

I happened to come across Kristopher K Design when I discovered Spoonflower a couple weeks ago (see this post), and I'm so glad I did. I'm new to her work, but I'm a big fan already, and Kris has got me thinking about ways to use her fabrics (Is it too late to learn how to sew? I want my own Black Coral pillow).

From Kris' blog:

"My name is Kris, from Kristopher K Design, Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. I have a background in Art and Interior Design and an absolute obsession for beautiful prints on natural organic fabrics. I adore French Provincial and Modern Interiors, and love to design and decorate with tertiary color palettes inspired by nature."

I love Kris' patterns and designs. I love her color choices. I love the styling in her photos. Looking at her fabrics makes me realize that I seriously want to learn to sew, pronto, but maybe in the mean time, I can order swatches and hang them on my wall (that wouldn't be weird, would it?).

Are you a fabric lover? You can find Kristopher K Designs here:

7 Rules of Makeup That are Ageless

por | | 0 comentarios

  • Don't tweeze above your brows.
Any fuzz above your brows creates an unflattering shadow, says New York City makeup artist Vivian Hidalgo of Minardi Salon. To pluck any strays above brows, Hidalgo suggests you look directly into a large mirror (do not tilt your chin up or down -- this distorts your view). And starting at the inner corner, tweeze one hair at a time. To prevent over tweezing, after you've plucked one row, step back from the mirror to check your progress.

  • Clear up a zit overnight with a dab of toothpaste.
Models started sharing this so-called beauty secret, but the truth is, while the toothpaste does dry the blemish somewhat, it doesn't go far enough, according to NYC dermatologist Diane Berson, M.D. You'll get faster results with an over-the-counter acne treatment containing five percent benzoyl peroxide. Or try Neutrogena's On-the-Spot Acne Patch. (P.S. This absolutely works... I do it all the time!)

  • You absolutely need a lip liner.
Not always. Neutral lip colors are more forgiving and less likely to show imprecise application. Typically, only dark or bright shades (like red) really need a liner, but makeup pro Kat James has an easier method that produces more natural-looking results: Smooth on lip balm, then apply lipstick to center of lips only. Next, spread the color toward the edges of lips with a lip brush; the lip balm helps dilute the color to create a softer stain, rather than the hard-edged look you'd get with lipstick and liner.

  • Put on concealer first, then foundation.
Makeup maven Laura Mercier likes to apply foundation first to even out skin tone and provide a base for concealer to cling to. As a result, you use less of your concealer, which makes for a more natural look.

  • Rinse your hair with cold water to make it shine.
The theory is that a final rinse with cold water after your shampoo seals the cuticle, helping it to reflect more light. But according to hair and scalp expert Philip Kingsley, author of Hair, An Owner's Handbook (Aurum Press, 1995), lowering the water temperature won't enhance shine. In fact, cold water constricts the blood vessels of the scalp, temporarily cutting off the supply of nutrients needed for healthy hair. What helps give hair a pretty sheen? Rinsing thoroughly so that no dulling shampoo residue remains on your hair.

  • Foundation should match the skin tone of your face.
The surprising answer, according to Kat James, is that your foundation will look more natural if it matches your neck -- specifically, the area near the collarbone. The skin here has a touch more yellow to its undertone, while the face tends to be a little more pink or red. And the last thing you want is a foundation with pink -- it's aging and looks artificial.

  • Rub your wrists together after applying fragrance.
Some fragrance experts feel that rubbing crushes delicate fragrance molecules, and, as a result, you don't get the true scent. But Annette Green, president of The Fragrance Foundation, disagrees -- unless you have oily skin. "Natural oils mixing with the fragrance before it dries might interfere with the scent," says Green. Allow the fragrance to dry naturally; it takes about ten minutes. (source: Freddys Fitness Zone)

Week 20 :: Rainy Day

por | | 0 comentarios

I love me a good thunderstorm; don't you?

I didn't always. In Hawaii, thunderstorms don't happen often - the tradewinds are so strong, they blow clouds right across the islands. Rain in Hawaii is full of soft drops, and only lasts for a little while. When we moved to Texas, it was a completely different story. Rain here isn't always soft; sometimes it's hard and rough, sometimes it's violent. Sometimes it's moody, sometimes it brings hail or flash floods, and sometimes it cloaks tornados.

Grade school here included tornado drills in addition to fire drills, and jobs required you to know the safe places. I've learned to watch the clouds for a particular greenish yellow shade, which could spell trouble in the sky. It took a while to acclimate, but I can appreciate a really good thunderstorm now.

Rainy days are "cuddle up with a good book" time.

Rainy days are an excuse to rejuvenate and rest.

Rainy days make me appreciate the sun even more.

How do you use a rainy day?
